Is it possible to "desync" a transmission?

i know this is a weird question. but me being a truck driver kinda raises curiousity to this...i drive a truck that is a 18 speed. big rigs do not have synchronized transmissions. meaning you have to either rev the motor to match the gear you want, or let the motor rpms drop to match the gear your going in also. after you get the hang of it, it is really nice. and super simple to float a gear. i know its not good to float gears on our normal day to day passenger vehicles. but would it be possible to take the synchros out of a standard manual transmission, and still be able to use it? or would it completly ruin the trans? any info would be useful, as im really just more curious than anything here

highly doubt it. i guess in theory it could work but the mechanisms inside the tranny are engineered to work with the syncros there.

No. The syncronizers slide on hubs/sliders, these are integral in how the operation of the trans works and also take up space in the trans and have a huge effect on clearances. You'd also be in the minority of people that would actually wanna do this.

No, trannys are either built with synchros or without.

I think the big rigs do away with syncros in the name of simplifying the trans and not wanting to have to replace syncros. Durability thing. Figure they arent worried about driveability in a big rig.

I learned to drive some vehicles that were so old and worn out that the synchros didn't work at all. I don't see any reason this couldn't be done by turning them down or taking out the synchro springs-assuming someone would actually want end up with non-functioning ones.

drive your car long enough and you'll have no choice but to rev-match, these trannys aren't the best

I build the tranny's in your rig. They do have a syncro for the low to high range but not from gear to gear.Im not a fast enough typer to explain why it's that way.And no you can take them out of a car.

thanks for this helpful information guys...its not like i was serious about ripping a trans apart. i just like my semi and float gears like a mofo, and thought itd be kinda fun to do in a car. i might have to look more seriously into a dog box

I've never ridden in a semi before. What's this floating gears you speak of?

"floating gears" is basically power shifting in a normal passenger car....only using the clutch to start or stop the vehicle....only in semis its as simple as getting the speed to match the motor rpms and it will simply slide right out of gear and go right into the next

i've done that once or twice in my mustang. you have to get the rpms just right. I dont deliberately try to do this though, I rather just shift normal. However, to me powershifting means shifting with the gas wide open
