They are slow and have major turbo laq, don't pay much for them. They can be had for cheap. They handle pretty good, ummm I seen one with an LT1 in it.

Really what do you want to know? I have a little knowledge on them, I wanted one for my first car. Even looked at a few, my the insuarce quote forced the decision to no.

didn't argue otherwise, I wouldn't touch an old (or new) porsche either if I wanted to get to my planned destination

I still would not mind a 911 as a toy, then again... That would probably change if I owned one. I use to be the biggest Porsche fan until I drove the 944 Turbo, meh... Then when I had a bit of money, I looked at a Boxter S. I liked it, for a Miata like car. But not enough to pay for it.

Define slow exactly? For its time it was quite fast. Its a turbo car, and the OP says its a project car. What exactly makes you think a turbo car isnt some upgrades away from being a monster? The 944 is also one of the best handling cars ever made.
I will say though that they are at best a 20 yr old european car and although initial cost is cheap, parts and services are still Porsche type pricing. You gotta pay to play with a car like this.

They do handle really well, 50/50.

like previously stated, 50/50 weight distribution. Porsches are Porsches. Handle is what they do best. If the thing is fucking tits, and has service records I'd buy it and put a few toys on it. If by project car you mean the whole thing has to be redone. Then no. It'll cost him enough money he could probably get a used 996 for that kind of money when its all done.

Accept for the old 911's, they turned around a little to easy... That's why allot of them had lead in the front.
