    Plasma TV

I have heard that plasma TV's are not designed to last more than three years before they " burn out" Have any of you had a plasma TV for a while? If so how long and have any of you had any maintenance issues with it? What brand do you have? Is there any reason not to buy a plasma TV now that they have come down in price? Are there any benefits to having an LCD or other vs. the plasma? Thanks for the help

I've got a 50'' Panasonic plasma and had no problems with it. And as far as plasma's life expectancy, it's more like 6-10 years. The HD picture is far superior than flat screens, CRTs, etc. Definitely worth the cash.

By the way, I've had mine about 3-4 years, so far so good.

The color has a half life of 4 years if left on 24 hours a day. The average tv is on for 6 hours a day. If your tv is only on for roughly 6 hours a day then they are said to last 12 to 16 years. The half life is described as how long it will take for the color to lose half of its brightness. The tv will still work it just will not be quite as bright. A plasma at half its brightness will still be better than any flat screen. I have a 42 in plasma in the livingroom and a 32 flat screen in thew bedroom. I use the one in the bedroom to put me to sleep.

Life length goes by hours... not years...

they last for a while... you should get a "DLP, HD"... It's like watching every thing in 3d... every thing has depth to it... it's infuckincredable...

Plasma HD is NOT far supieror than any other technology when it comes to picture quality, especially CRT.

When it comes to picture quality, CRT projection TVs that are properly callibrated produces the best HD picture, that is truest to the colors of the original material. Right now it can't be beat when it comes to PQ. The other technologies, such as DLP, LCD, Plasma, etc are coming close and will probably pass it at some point. Especially since you can acheive high contrast ratios now with some DLP TVs with 10,000:1 CR.

Plasmas have nice pictures, but they are not even close to being able to produce the best PQ.

i went shopping for t.v. last weekend. i found that plasma tv are more affordable and the picture quality is equal or better than lcd's. the viewing angle on the lcd's is poor, compared to plasma. if you're gonna put the lcd and view straigh into it, it is somewhat brighter, but move a little to the sides and you loose the picture. some of the very high end, high price lcds have 180deg viewing angle. on the other hand plasmas have incredible viewing angles but high glare/reflection. and yes it is true that the expected life on a plasma is 40k hours.

i guess it comes down to what u can afford and how u gonna use it....

I have two flat panel LCD's a Sony 30" and a Sharp 37" and both of them have terrific viewing angles, so they must be the ones with the 180 degrees. And as far as PQ, I am stunned by how wonderful the picture is, esp. HDTV. Amazing quality, it's like a high-res photoshop image. You can see every pore in a persons face. Color is great too, esp. shows like Las Vegas and CSI Miami, where every scene is like they turned up the chroma knob. But in a good way.

I went 62 DLP. Easy to change out the bulb. Plasma's are too expensive.

With LCD I would worry about pixel dropout.

i went 62 in CRT flat screen of course.

anything less than 50 inches is now too small for me.

You don't necessarily mean flat screen, as in thin like < 6" thick, right? You mean like a CRT projection tv and not the tube tv.

I just purchased a 42" panasonic plasma hdtv. The expected viewing life of these tv's are now 60,000 hours as apposed to the 10,000 hours just a couple of years ago. The plasma will last longer then most conventional tube tv's. Approximately 20 years.
