pine car derby
We picked up Zach's pine car for the scout derby coming up next month tonight. Now I know on a car board there has to be some people here that know all the tricks right? I'm gonna search online and look at the rules and memorize them by the letter and then get borderline of breaking them all.

the only thing i remember about that was i graphited the hell out of the wheel axles, i spent a lot of time making sure the car tracked straight, and i put the wheels in a drill rounded the surface of the wheel so a the wheel had a small contact area with the track

On my winning car, what my dad did(I literally had no hand in it whatsoever) was cut the car down as much as possible as small as he could get it within the rules. And then he weighted the shit out of it to the maximum allowed. Sanded it with such fine sand paper it felt like glass. And glossy paint. He had the axles spinning so nicely you would have thought they were ball bearing too. My margins of victory were so much that you didn't need to wait and see which light bulb turned on either.
Edit To Add: I left the scouts as a second year Wee-blow or w/e the hell they call it, so I wasn't some highschooler nerd in the scouts.

There's a difference between putting weight in the front or rear. One will pull you down faster. The other will be better when the track flattens out. I think the front isbetter off the start, not sure. And add alot of camber, less rolling resistance. Plus the inside edge usually has less burrs and casting flaws.

I always hollowed out a small hole in the back of the car and filled it with melted metal(don't remember what kind). With the weight in the middle of the car it was balanced out.

Same here, my first place co2 car is on my bed side table =)
I won the last race by cheating, I extended the axles out as far as possible, and managed to hook the car next to me. So he just pushed me. They had eye-bolts on top of cars that a string went through to guide them to the end. So it was easy for them to get together.

Yeah, we did the c02 cars in my 8th grade tech class. I liked pine wood derby better. The c02 cars weren't very consistant, sometimes the seemingly best car built lost and a pos won?

My eyelets were on the bottom. I had the car on a shelf next to the trophy but it fell off in the middle of the night and i stepped on it and broke it.

I still have at least one of my Pinewood Derby cars around here somewhere. I do remember turning the wheels in a small lathe before installation and also using graphite on them.

The hardest part with ours, was drilling the holes for the wheels. Teacher wanted it to be a skill contest more than smarts. So the rule was you had to drill them with a hand drill, no drill press. You try to drill perfectly square hole with a hand drill in the 9th grade! Alignment was pretty close, but still it sucked.
