    Question Online/electronic spelling/grammar

Whenever I'm typing I generally make an attempt to use correct spelling and grammar (except when trying to be funny/sarcastic/imitate at moron). I do this regardless of the format, be it emails(professional or otherwise, the former should be a given), forum posts, online chat (Facebook, AIM, etc.), even text messages. I find myself navigating an extremely annoying number pad/menu purely to add the apostrophe in "That's."

Does this make me a tool?

(inb4 someone finds a mistake in this thread and makes fun of me.)

Mistake found... the period should be outside the quotation marks...

I try to do the same... to the point of google-ing correct spelling before using a word I'm unsure about...

Aw, only in the last sentence, which was an afterthought.

I did the same until recently... I switched to Firefox and it has a built-in spellchecker for any text entry box, which is pretty cool.

No. Not at all. It shows you were taught something in school

That's what I like to think, however I've found that some people find it pretentious for some reason.

Haha, yeah, I usually just add the commonly used words, the most recent being "Facebook."

I'm obnoxious about that too. I just started using the iphone which I like. It corrects a lot of things automatically. I get annoyed as hell trying to talk to someone who abbreviates everything. When people text me and I have to sound out what they've typed to try to make words out of it, that bugs the hell out of me.

I actually heard on the news the other day that public schools are considering taking cursive out of the curriculum???

Printing is fine they said. They also said that we need to concentrate on computer and electronic communications and the new age of grammar...

Yeah, I like to think that I'll be better prepared for the professional world than they.

I feel the same way. I don't mind the common ones, but the obscure ones defeat the purpose of an acronym. Or what's even worse, when someone uses an abbreviation/acronym they made up themselves.

I haven't used cursive in forever. I still know how do all of it (although "z" always takes a few seconds to remember).

However I thought cursive is only used by rich people when they write thank you notes...

New age of grammar? That's terrible. There is no "new" age or "old" age... it's just either correct or incorrect.

Ha ha... But, you can 'sign' your name right?

I always use cursive/handwriting. Even on my shopping list Rarely do I print. Just habit I guess

Of course I had the most annoying thing happen a while back... I had to sign some sort of government document. I gave it back to the lady and she said "Sir, you signature has to be legible," and told me to write it in proper cursive (which any 5th grader could easily reproduce). I did it, but it seemed to remove the point of it in my opinion.

I mostly use printed capitals when writing informally... Partly because I think I picked it up from my father who does the same, and partly because my handwriting is bad and makes it easier to decipher.

I do that sometimes as well. I find some of my capitals leaning toward the 'printing' side. But, by now I just consider it to be my brand of handwriting.

Sometimes you just have to have your own style

Yeah, just add a smiley, those will complete the partial lowercase requirement.
