Doubt the T/A would like 85 octane at 11:1.

It sucks, but what are you gonna do?

The thing that gets me is that the public response really highlights the lack of understanding by Americans as to how the free market works.

Gasoline and oil are publicly traded commodities where the prices are set by traders. The biggest reason our energy prices are through the roof is the ever strengthing economies in India and China. We outsource our jobs and share technology, and all of the sudden these folks are able to buy cars, install AC units, ect. There is only so much oil drilled and so much gasoline refined, and we are bidding for it on a global market.

It's not the oil companies setting the price. It's the market.

As to the "record profits" claim, that's just common sense.

They still operate on roughly the same profit margin that they usually do, but their cost of crude is going up, so obvioulsy their profits will increase.

They operate on roughly a 9% profit margin.

For simplicitiy's sake, lets say that in 2004, it cost them 1.50 to produce a gallon of gas. That takes into account the price of crude, transportation, labor, energy spent in the refining process, ect.

At a 9% margin, they are making 13.5 cents per gallon.

Say with the increased prices in crude, transportation, labor, energy, ect, in 2006 it cost them 2.00 to produce a gallon of gas.

At a 9% margin, they are now making 18 cents per gallon.

They are not charging any more for their services, they are just passing on their operating expense.

If you want to start putting a dent in the price of gas, start with the .50 or so tax that is built into every gallon.

    NOW...

Say congress hits them with a "windfall profit tax", as some people are in favor of.

Saying that corporations and business pay taxes is a myth. They simply incorporate their tax bill into their cost of production, and pass it on to you. The cost of gas goes up more.

It's a way for government to tax you without you realizing it.

The two best ways to handle this are-

    1. Drill more of our own oil.

    2. Alternative energy sources.

Yes and No. If it was all about traders and the market then you wouldn't have quotes from big oil like these.

    From a few years back:
"New goverment regulations on cleaner burning fuel will cause the price of gas to rise as Oil companies have to add MTBE to fuel."

    Today

"New goverment restrictions on the use of MTBE will cause the price of gas to rise as Oil companies are forced to stop using the additive. This will reduce the nations gasoline supply by 145,000 barrels a day"

So it goes up because they have to use it and it goes up cause they can not use it. Frankly I don't think there is an answer. We have people in Washington that are sleeping with the oil companies and they are going to keep their profits and money one way or the other. Regardless of what we do.

What I would like to see is something like the XPrize ($10,000,000) that was given to some goofy spaceship plane to go to the first company that can produce a gas burning engine that can get 150MPG. I am not talking some goofy engine that cost 100,000 bucks either. An engine that can easily be mass produced

Or maybe they could allow me to buy a diesel smart car that can be easily gotten in Canada. 80MPG doesn't sound to bad.
