I would have picked it up at 800 as well. Looks like a fun toy. I've been looking for sand rails but everyone wants an arm and a leg. Looks like a fun project, looking forward to updates

Don't lower it. Baja is more fun. I've owned 3 VW's, two 69's and a 65 and two were Baja bugs. I'd lose the extension on the hood though. Just doesn't look right. You can do a lot to bugs for little money. My son is on his second restore right now.

yea im gonna leave it as is since its already got a lot of stuff done to is such as roll bar, lift and other things. i will be updating progress. The car is still at my dads house, but i threw the engine in the back of our ford escape (didnt even have to lower the seats) and i brought it home to clean up.
im gonna try to get the car here next weekend. my son is already buggin me to give it to him when he gets his license, but the ol lady is wantin me to put it together and sell it for a profit.

actually i have no idea. I do not know a thing about volkswagens. my dad and uncle were big into them back in the 80s, but havent messed with them in years. i havent even started researching anything about them. i wont be motivated to do that until its sitting in my garage. is there a way to tell what engine it is?

That's a 1600 dual port with what looks like a mount for an aftermarket carb, a 009 distributor, fuel pump block off meaning an electric fuel pump somewhere, and a power pulley.

Honestly, there is no way to be sure about the engine without opening it up.

With all the brightwork on that one I'd be surprised if it didn't have the oversize "slip in" pistons making it a 1641cc engine.

I can say with a carb like that it's not likely to be any bigger than a 1776cc (stock crank + 90.5mm pistons)

Pop off a valve cover and look at the casting number. If it's "041" you've got a decent set of non-stock cylinder heads.

the guy i bought it from said his brother had it in a vw performance shop in oklahoma, and he got it out and then he died a short time later. so there may be some things done to the engine. he said it moved pretty good. i will check out the heads soon and report back.

and to "jimmy hoffa", thanks for your kind words. you are a true gentleman.

You'll have a great time with the bug once you get into it. You will need some special tools for jobs like draining the trans oil and removing the axle shafts but not a lot. Looks like you got a great deal, I'd easily give the $800 you did for that car. I had a '69 while I was in Germany that I was able to pull the engine, swap the clutch and put it all back together by myself in the parking lot in an afternoon with nothing more than a small 2 1/2 ton jack and basic tools. Enjoy!

Kind of reminds me of the Willey Mays Hayes ride in the first Major League.
800 bucks can't go wrong with it. Sell your old lady and keep the car

A lot you know. Ever seen one at the track? Bugs are fun. Easy to work on. Relatively inexpensive to modify and can be built to haul ass too

Been toying with the idea of trying to get an old Bug lately. Wonder if Delaware allows stingers

    I saw that

I'm glad my son took a liking to the bugs I had when he was little and that he's into them himself. They're fun cars.

I always swore I'd never buy any VW. Watching Wheeler Dealers and talking to some olkd fart mechanics I'm discovering how easy they are to work on
