    New Home ??

My Fiancé and I moved into our new home (renting for a couple years) with our kiddos yesterday. The entire downstairs is tile, upstairs is carpet and there is only one A/C unit. The air has been running pretty much all day and the house is 75 degrees and feels extremely humid. Today is the first day the A/C ran so could this be the cause? If not, what is going on?

Also, the tiles are sweating/VERY slippery

That's not good. Is it a whole house system or a window unit?

The fact it is the first day running a/c should have no bearing. A/C is supposed to de-humidify the air, thus making it feel colder. First thing to check is the cooling fins around the unit and make sure they are breathing, then have someone check the contact switch. Fairly cheap part to replace. My A/C was "running" but not getting anywhere. Had a buddy of mine come look at it and it turned out to be the contact switch. $100 for his time and the part and I was good to go. One other thing to check, up in the attic at the unit, check the side door you slide off to check things. There is a little switch there that will need to be depressed when the door is seated properly to let the unit work; otherwise, no worky. That door not being seated properly cost me $75 to learn about.

if it hasn't been running in a while the drain tube that lets the water from the condensor unit drain off might need to be snaked. they can get plugged up over time. every yr i had to in the spring. i've learned to pour bleach into a service port and this help keep it clean.

also on mine is a switch that has a "drain bowl" if it is full of water it will not let the system com on only the fans.

it is located inside the filter intake for the house air. for me at that is.

I had the contact switch go out in mine as well and my unit was only about 5 years old. Cheap and easy part to replace.

what is the outside temp? a typically ac system if sized right should only give you 15-20 degree difference from the outside to the inside. check the filter. check the blower wheel on the furnace if its dirty can effect performance. you might and are more then likely low on freon in the system if you are down a half a pound on the freon charge it will affect the unit check and see the unit is iced up or the lines are iced up that's a good indicator of it.

    Pics of new house?

And I'm jelly you're having to use the A/C. Of course we're not doing too bad here in Colorado compared to pretty much the entire Midwest and northeast

Glad you got it all figured out though

We had a choice two years ago -- install AC at the house or put up a new building to store our cars in. It's going to be warm again this summer.
