Need some help with Windows XP
I was loading windows XP onto my desktop with a CD that came with my old laptop which was a Compaq Presario. Everything loaded fine but when it asked for my 25 digit code I looked all over the house and couldn't find my certificate paperwork. Guess it was thrown away when my laptop crashed for the fourth time. Is there any way to get this code so I can finish with the installation? Do all the Windows XP Operating CD's have a different code?

You old code was probably on the bottom of your old laptop. As far as re aquiring it. Your out of luck. The only way to get a new one legally is to buy a new copy of Windows.
The illegal was consist of "borrowing" a code from a freinds. The codes are NOT specific to the CD so you can use any code with any CD as long as the versions match. I.E. you can't take a windows home edition CD-KEY and plug it into the install for the Windows Proffesional edition.
Good Luck

Thanks, guess I'll have to buy a new version of it. I tossed my laptop a few months ago so evidently I'm out of luck using this CD.

Damn, thanks man!! Go ahead and delete that post just in case, I got it wrote down here. Thanks again, hopefully this will work. now on that update, whenever I log on to the internet it'll ask if I want to update correct? and I just click No? I heard they can read your computer and get the serial number so I sure as hell won't do that, thanks again for the help.

Yes you want to update but you want to pick and choose your updates so you need to open your control panel and then security center and click automatic updates and click the button that says notify me but let me choose. No they can't read your computer and they don't care now becuse of the new windows vista OS that is coming out next month.

O.k., I ran home really quick and tried that code but it wouldn't take it. I wish I could keep track of stuff better, thanks for the help though. Guess I'll have to buy the Windows XP program from Best Buy and forget about using this one.

Yeah, I'll see if anyone I know can hook me up before I spend $200.00 just for some software. I'd be better off buying a whole new computer for that price. The computer I have now is a POS Windows 98 Hewlett Packard, for some reason I keep getting these messages popping up saying there is an Error at this location and that location, all kinds of programs are running which causes it to lock up. Evidently it's infected with Spyware or something, I've tried running Spybot which has not helped, I've tried Norton Anti-Virus and everything looks fine. Oh, and whenever I click on say, the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop it locks up or any icon for that matter.
