Download the beta of 2010- it's your best bet.

Even if you download the Pro version it's only 617mb. Might take a couple of hours, but you'd be able to do you paper.

You could even download Open Office it will read Microsoft Word files. I think you can even sign up for Office Workspace which is an online version of Word (Google Docs may even open it.) There are a ton of ways to keep from having to re-do the entire paper.

Office 2010 will have a great basic version that will be free. Granted, Open Office is a more complete solution, the free version of 2010 will have Word and Excel and ties into Office Live.
