Need help choosing a Martial Art
i've decided to start taking martial art lessons but the problem is that there are so damn many different styles i'm having trouble picking one. i'm a stockier guy(5'9" 195lbs.) with a large build, so anything aerobatic is probably out, as much as i'd love to learn Capoeira. what i'm looking for is something good for self-defense against both single and multiple attackers. any suggestions?

A good firearm and seven yards
It depends on what your real goal is. For strictly self-defense, I would stay with grappling/groundfighting styles. Judo, Aikido, Ju-Jitsu are all good forms and would serve you well, but be patient and commit to the training. Any basic styles of Karate will have attributes that will be useful, after-all they are martial arts, but I believe kicks are to be kept to a minimum. Sweeps, hand strikes, and joint manipulations will allow you to maintain options. Roundhouse kicks are very impressive, but it takes great skill to do correctly and most importantly, consistently.
While I will never be an expert in this, my experience is that groundfighting skills are the most important. You can either force the suspect to give up through pain compliance (or hold them until help arrives), or take it to an injury that disables them to the point they can't continue. But with MULTIPLE opponents, the best advice I have is obtain a CCL and good competence with a quality handgun.
When I took knife fighting courses the one thing that was repeated, ad infinitum, was that you should expect to be cut in over 60% of confrontations, regardless of your expertise. In training, that percentage was reinforced to a point where I am a believer. Very few confrontations with bad people won't involve at least a cutting instrument, that's why I am a proponent of good firearms training and CCL's for law-abiding folks. Sans that, I still recommend groundfighting/grappling arts, and distance, distance, distance.Last edited by jad628; 11-27-2006 at 09:45 AM.

Thai Kick-boxing and Jui-jitsu.
reason being:
thai kickboxing is the most undefeated style in stand up fighting. Jui-jitsu is the most undefeated in ground fighting. So for pure defense of protecting yourself, you will know a great stand up fighter and since most fights end up on the ground you will know a great ground fighter and beable to protect yourself.
As far as the work out level, both style will push your body into excellent shape.

learn aikido and always carry one of these bad boys with you
you can go up to 300lbs and you will still be undefeated
but seriously against multiple opponents aikido works pretty good
