navy to shoot down satellite... real reason???
i'm not sure i buy the reason given as to why they are going to shoot that satellite down.... i mean, there is such a small chance that thing would even survive re-entry much less hit a populated area.... i didn't think about this till i heard it on the radio this morning but this seems like a darn good test for the "star wars" antiballistic system......
CNN reports that china is a bit upset even though they did this very same thing not too long ago... maybe the US feels like they need to show they can do it also?
they say the thing has 1,000 pounds of frozen propellant that is toxic.. seems to me that shit woud burn up quickly on the way back....
thoughts??

My life is a- Ben Stiller movie.
i found this entertaining...can you picture georgie jumping up n down like a toddler being told he can ride a roller coaster for the first time, as he initaites this command:
The option of striking the satellite with a missile launched from an Aegis cruiser was decided upon by President Bush after consultation with several government and military officials and aerospace experts, said Deputy National Security Adviser James Jeffrey.
"If we miss, nothing changes," said NASA administrator Michael Griffin. "If we shoot and barely touch it, the satellite is just barely in orbit" and would still burn up somewhat in the atmosphere, he said.
"If we shoot and get a direct hit, that's a clean kill and we're in good shape," he added.

I will chime in- because I have a background in space systems operations. I was a space system (satellite) operator for 7+ years in the USAF, before becoming a recruiter.
I know FIRST hand. that not all decaying/ or deorbiting satellites burn up completely.
I will not go into details, because frankly, I can't. But lets not jump into any conspiracy theories of the big bad USA bullying the world, or showing off our "power"-- I think the world knows our power.
As a side note-- Most everyone probably knows the USA hasn't used a fraction of its military power in 50+ years. Not saying we should-- but we are definitely more considerate of human rights and minimizing collataral damage than most other nations.
If anything I don't think the world doubts our "power"-- but maybe doubt our willingness to use it IF (key word IF) needed.

God damnit. I wish the government would keep this shit to themselves.
But no. They had to go and tell the whole world.
Great, now in about two weeks time, the internet is going to be ruined again because it will be flooded by conspiracy theory videos titled "OMGaz GUVMENT SHOOTING AT ALIEUNS!!"

Both the USA and the former USSR did this back in the '80s so we have nothing to prove. Also, this is at a much lower altitude than an orbitting satellite by about 500 miles. This is also much lower than a ballistic missile. One more thing, the "Star Wars" anti-ballistic system is based on laser, not missiles.
But I do commend you on trying to start your very own conspiracy theory based on zero facts.
My bad, you are only part of countless others who think our government is always up to no good for human kind. You may now collect your liberal biased card and join the crowd in Hollywood. Al Gore will be your sponser and you should be receiving your information packet in the mail very soon, providing the G-men are not already tapping your phone line and following every key stroke you make.
If you feel you are being watched/listened in on, just put on your tin foil hat and you will be safe. Communication will be made via carrier pidgeon. Please leave a window open for delivery.Last edited by 98SS#689; 02-21-2008 at 10:45 AM.

What China did was bad though, the satellite they fired at was very high up, and the debris endangered the space station, the Hubble, the GPS satellites, which were all at a lower altitude. The satellite the US shot at was very low and didn't endanger anything. They even brought back the shuttle before firing.

Just to make sure we can nail them basterds from space, so now i think we should shoot down all of the other things that float around in space just to make it safe.
