My first hunting rifle
I always wanted to buy a large caliber rifle, so yesterday i went to the range with i friend of mine ho owns a couple a them.
I shot a mauser 86 sniper rifle that was a dream to shoot, but it is wasy to expensive for my budget .
I also shot a mauser 225 308 witch i realy liked and i`m thinking of buying.
The one i did`t like was the 7mm, that thing has a hard recoil, after 10 shot my shouder started to hurt . Have to wait 3 weeks for my permit to pass.

308 is good--also 30.06 or 270wsm--excellent knock down without the big recoil---i like the 270wsm-

I shoot a 7mm Rem Mag and a 270 Rem and love them. Recoil is nothing on these guns, the noise is a little loud on the 270, but I can shoot the 7mm all day. Are you sure you were tight to your shoulder on all shots? I'm 6'2" 345# though, so that might have something to do with my felt recoil.
Either way congrats...keep shooting and keep safe.

308 is a great caliber for deer and other medium sized game... you won't be disappointed. depending on your budget I would take a look at a remington 700 lots of accesories and it's been around almost as long as Sarge

You can shoot it, you can't hunt with it.

I lost all my rifles in a tragic boating accident, but I love the 308 round. Im trying to trade my lost bushmaster xm-15 up to an ar-10 style weapon.

308 is a good all-around medium bore caliber, you can also check out 7mm08 for a soft shooting rifle. It's a 308 win case necked down to a 7mm bullet. As previously stated, you can get into a new Remington 700 SPS model for around $450-$500 depending on where you pick it up. Be prepared to spend as much or more on glass and mounting depending on what your goals are.

Try a .270 I think you will like it. I have a 30 30 I love also. My .270 is a Weatherby and was under 400..

Shooting a 270wsm here but been using the 6.8spc AR lately. The caliber really depends on your area and size of game. My county was only allowed to use .22 caliber rifles to deer hunt with, like a .22-250, .223, etc. Now when can use what ever but must be elevated 10ft above ground. .243 would be the biggest we need for our deer. A good friend just shot a hugh 8pt. @ 200lbs, that is a big deer here. Taken with a .22-250.

alabama will not allow deer hunting with a rimfire. i own 4 .308's a savage 10FP, ruger stainless laminated carbine mark 2, and 2 winchester model 100's one carbine and one rifle. i wouldnt have any other for deer hunting its just my round.

The best rifle for you is the one that you feel most comfortable firing. If it's recoil,or noise makes you flinch or jerk it is no good to you. If it is to heavy for you to lug around all day it is no good. Personally I am comfortable enough with my 30-06 that it doesn't phase me,and i have taken deer at over 300 yards easy. 30.30 is also a good rifle I prefer winchester due to the way the "pistol grip" was but since they are no longer made ,marlin would be the way to go. Have you tried the mauser k98? they can be had for fairley cheap.
I would highly reccomend any Remington in any caliber. they are fair in their pricing and can be had in many calibers. depending on what you hunt is what you should base what you buy. if you are planning on going for anything from whitetail to grizz i would reccomend the model 700 .300 ultra mag. it has 3 different tier bullits 1st is the same power as a 30.06 for white tail, black bear ,and simular sized game. 2nd tier is as powerful as a .300 I believe, it is good for elk moose and that sized animals the final one is a nasty bastard, good for grizzly bears, kodiaks alaskan brown bears and anything else you want to call them monstrosities. the "kick: is about the same as a 12 gauge.
Of course the ammo prices with that change, tier one is the same as reg 30-06 ammo, the 2nd is the same as .300 and the 3rd is around 80 bucks. the good news is you can use the cheaper tier one stuff for sighting in and rem gurentees that you will be withen a couple inches on the higher tiers. I will own one of those bad boys one of these days.
however if your planning on hunting nothing bigger than a blackbear in heavy woods a 30.30 will do fine. they are short, light, and deadly at close range (150 yards, some bullit manufactures say their ammo increases that range)
a 30-06 for anything up to an elk, possibly moose depending on distance, your skill and how comfortable. they are fully capable of making very long shots.
One thing I would like to stress is that a bolt action is probably your best option,it is supposed to be more accurate, easier to maintain.
mauser arguably has the best bolt action out. it is the smoothest, and easiest to operate in many many conditions. many companies have tried to copy it with remington coming closest (the last i checked)
finish of the rifle depends on what you like some prefer the old style wood with blued metal some like wood with stainless,me I prefer black synthetic with a maate finish. there are many options out there. different camo patterns ect.Last edited by cuervo25_1; 11-11-2009 at 06:06 PM.

Im shooting .338 win mag out of a remington 700 BDL 1987 Classic, Leopold scope. Nice out to 5 or 600 yards. Great for Grizzly and Brown bear, elk, moose and deer too.
