1997 Grand Cherokee- 1999 Firebird.
My brother broke the VTEC on his Accord today.
Yep. He said he was driving down the road when all of a sudden his car bgan to run like shit. He pulled into an Auto Zone and they hooked up a code scanner. The guy said "your VTEC is broken." He called a dealer in town and they quoted him a price of $1000 to fix it. He called me tonight and asked if I knew where the VTEC was located on his motor because he couldn't find it! I'm not sure what is actually wrong with his car, but I thought that was a funny story.

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
So, if I read this correctly, the solenoid that re-routes the oil pressure to the cam lobes (at 3500rpm) to reposition them for longer duration and greater lift is not functioning?

That doesnt make sense why his car would be running like shit. I thought vtec only turned on at higher rpms. From my understanding vtec is in the cams, but there is a solenoid that controls when it goes on, maybe that broke

umm, tell him to buy a solinoid and fix it himself, me and my friend put a vtec head on a car that didnt have vtec before. If a couple of teenagers can figure that out then he should be able to switch out the solinoid. and if its not the solinoid, then he has worse problems to worry about.(your going to need a new head pretty much).

Should have done the fast and furious line.
"Now, me and the mad scientist got to rip apart the block... and replace the piston rings you fried. "

The one thing I learned from the Fast and the Furious though, is that if you scream NAWWWWWWWSSSSS! loud enough, it will blow up.

Your brother needs to have someone that knows about honda's vtec system diagnose his car, ie either a honda dealer, honda service tech, honda enthusiast etc. Vatozone will have him replacing expensive crap he might not even need.

1997 Grand Cherokee- 1999 Firebird.
Update....he takes his car to the dealer. He signs off on the work order to repair his car. The estimate is a little north of $1100 after tax. He picks up his car 2 hours later and the total bill is $95. He said they took "something" apart and cleaned it and everything is fine now. Wow.....and honest car dealer!!
