military people!!! need your help!!!
So im 23, and have always had intrest in the military. After high school didnt want to join (graduated in 04 middle of the war!) so I went to a csu. Did 1 year, didnt work out. Dropped outta school. Caught a felony (possesion with the intent to sell white girl) did some time. Played with my life for like 5 years getin shot at, witnessing people lose their lives for stupid reasons, running from various law enforcement agencies, doing shit I cant even begin to explain to you guys.(Indictments aint cool lol) But anyways finally went straight, got a weak deli job serving people meat and fake smiles all day. But want more than this. So im coming from the gym today and was like maybe I should go to to some recruiters see if I try something new. Air force wasnt there called her on the cell phone. Told her about my record and 1 tattoo and she said in no way shape or form will I ever be in the AF. Crushed me a bit Then I talked to the Army guy and he was kinda positive. Told me to wait till I get my record expunged then come back and try which will be a the end of this year. Caught the case in 06. He said since troops are being pulled back the standards went up I guess. Think he was bsing me wit that one, but o wel. My question to yall is well I ever be able to serve my country, or my hopes a waste of time. And which branches let anyone in and which are hardest to get in.(Navy Seal maybe lol). All input is greatly appreciated. P.S my Grandfather and uncle served in Army proudly and another uncle in the Marines.

The standards have gone up recently, they are not lying to you on that. If you do have a record then it takes waivers to get you into any branch of the service, and right now they have cut down on what they are giving waivers for.

Im in the Army and yes they are going back to the strict guideline, but if you can get your record striaght and really want to do it then it can be done. There are some auotmatic disqualifiers that cannot be waived, since Im not a recruiter yet I cant tell you what they are. Go sit down with the recruiter lay it out they will tell you whether or not you can get in. Im sure he isnt BS'ing you on the standards if there is anyway possible to get you in he/she will they have to catch 2 recruits a month at most places to keep the command off thier backs. If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me and I can halp out good luck!

The army used to give waivers for felonies, but that policy got rescinded when we met our goal for troop strength... it actually has nothing to do with us pulling out of Iraq... the 2 last years have we had record high recruitment and retention(people re-enlisting) numbers.
What I can tell you is this... if you can get that shit expunged from your record, then yes, the army will take you. The tat is not a problem unless its on your face or your hands, and you can get a waiver for one on your hands. I think the marines would take you to, but don't quote me on that.

i'd say its going to be really hard for ya man. i give you credit for cleanin up your life and shootin straight, but you may never make it into the military. The felony thing is really killin your chances..

Felony makes it very hard, they use to be giving waivers for felonies but like all the ones before me said......Troops are staying in and people are signing up. One thing I can think of, but have no clue if it will work is this:
Contact your congressman/woman and ask if they could do something with your record in hopes of military service.
I have no fricken clue if that will work but its a different option.┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐

You should have went in 2004, that is when your country needed you the most, but Im sure you were affraid to go to war, I understand. It sounds like you have done some stupid stuff since then, its ok, never to late to turn things around. Sounds like you are on the right track. You can serve your country in a lot of differant ways. I would start by serving your local community first, then go from there.

what preston says is the truth too...that you can also serve your country by doing it at home in your community.
if you have your eyes set on the military then go for it. talk to the recruiters...find out what you would have to do and be serious about it and make sure that they know it.
otherwise get involved with the AmeriCorps or something like that. volunteer at a soup kitchen or something. i'm sure that you could go down to a local volunteer center and sign up to help out your fellow American in your own neighborhood. or if you want to serve your troops you can see what it takes to volunteer with the USO.
when i was discharged my DI told me that there were other things that i could do to serve my country. i didn't really believe him at first...but i got home and after a year or two thinking things over i got more involved in an Explorers program that teaches teens about the military. by doing that i serve the youth in my community and by extension i get my group involved in community projects. i also am a member of the Patriot Guard Riders (i'm a local RC). in that organization i serve the families of our fallen heros.
so...there's a lot that you can do without joining the military...but i would never discourage anyone from putting on the uniform.

To me, it doesn't sound like he wants to serve so much as he wants to change his life around and get out of a dead-end job (which there's nothing wrong with).
People join up for a lot of different reasons, i'd just suggest making sure you're being truthful to yourself about why you want to join a military branch. Ever think about going back to school and trying that again? If failure isn't an option, maybe you'll do better. Plus, it will allow more time for you to take care of your past indescretions on record.
BUT, if you do go back to school, make sure it's in a career that has no issue with your past felonies. Teaching is out, but maybe something in "sales" (LOL)?

You can get waivers for damn near anything in the marines. There are guys in my unit with all kinds of shit, but however I DO NOT recommend it. I would try the army or the Navy. I would recommend the air force, try going in and talking to another recruiter for the air force if thats what you want to do. I'm pretty much 100% sure the marines will take you but take into consideration that i have had multiple people tell me they would rather be back in prison.

Well, honestly, this doesn't surprise me at all.
I can tell you that the vast majority of the people in the army now wish they had never fucking joined, and most of them call me a fool for enlisting for 6 years to begin with.
It is NOT for everyone. If you can deal with authority, go somewhere else.
You think basic sucks? Of course it does, its basic. What nobody tells you is that you real unit sucks just as fucking much, except you get to go home at the end of the day. So choose carefully, because if you don't have the right mindset, you are going to be miserable, fuck up, and completely hate you life for whatever the rest of your term is.

I heard there's a recruitment freeze...dunno if it's true or not. G/f's sis's b/f went to the Marine recruiter and he said there's a freeze ....with this economy i'm sure they're flooded with people.
