Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has accepted a plea deal that could send him to prison, ending a federal dogfighting prosecution that jeopardizes his pro football career, his lawyers said.

Vick will plead guilty to felony conspiracy next Monday, defense attorney Lawrence Woodward told the Virginian-Pilot, of Norfolk, Virginia.

A status conference on the case is set for 3 p.m. in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia.

"After consulting with his family over the weekend," Michael Vick asks that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors regarding the charges pending against him," lead defense attorney Billy Martin said in a statement.

"Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his action and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter," Martin's statement said.

Vick's attorneys have been negotiating with federal prosecutors over terms of the deal, which must be approved by the judge. While prosecutors can recommend a sentence, the decision ultimately rests with the judge.

The plea would help Vick avoid additional federal charges.

That would be going too easy on him. I say cover his sorry ass with steak sauce and throw him in a pit full of pitbulls.

Well since he broke the law he should be punished. I do think that some of the opinions as to how he should be punished are a little over the top. We are only taking about dogs after all, it is not like he killed anybody.

Neither really. Just offering my opinion as to what I think the severity of this particular crime is.

Don't get me wrong, do I think what Vick did was wrong? Yes
Would I ever participate in such an event? No

Do I think this is any more cruel than deer hunting or the slaughter of cows for beef? Not really.

i'm all for him doing time, but the death penalty is a bit much. i think losing his nfl career and going to prison for 10 yrs is adequate.

in a sense i agree with you. i think its terrible to hurt dogs, and i think the crime is absolutely disgusting.

But do I think society is being hypocritical? Yes I totally do. People blast deer, bear, mountain lions, etc with shotguns. But because domesticated dogs are furry pets, it's jus terrible. Not for nothing but domesticated animals arent endangered theres thousands of them without loving homes.

But yes I'm totally sick of these NFL players stupidly thinking they can do whatever the fuck they want.
