    Looking for a DVR

As the title says, I'm looking for a DVR.

I always like to record T.V. shows and fast forward through the commercials. I use to have a VCR recorder/player and that work very well, but it quit working

They probably did, but they last a long time. I was able to record over shows several times, like 50 times, maybe 100s.

I've still got two of them and a crap load of VHS tapes. I've even still got brand new blank ones in my office. Not sure why either. One DVR is in my office closet and all the tapes are boxed up in the garage. Lots and lots of Disney stuff. Bought into the whole collectors edition crap. Had to have them all I own like maybe 15 DVDs if that. I'll never collect them like I did the VHS tapes. Ever.

I don't have any recommendations for a DVR. I have Dish and am using their Hopper.

Is your computer near a cable/antenna jack?

Put a tuner card in your PC and record to the HDD.

If you only have a laptop there are tons of USB versions available.

Light years better than a VCR or even a Tivo since there's no fee.

    Sadly now demodded :(

Let's jump into the Wayback Machine. A lady friend of mine still has a Sony BetaMax machine that works just fine and she has boxes and boxes of tapes for it.

Betamax and VHS came out within a year of eachother. And I think we all know who won that battle. My dad still has his beta in his basement somewhere.

I still have two VHS players hooked up. On in my bedroom as it is a DVD/VHS player and one in my basement as that is where we keep all the disney movies/movies from when I was a kid. And my kids watch the crap out of them.

I remember when both came out....or rather when they became popular. My dad at the time had a video rental place and had to keep copies of both beta and vhs. It was a short lived battle though really....beta wasn't around very long. When we were cleaning out my dad's shop after he died we found tons of shit like that. He also had some laser disc players/discs laying around too.

Kinda like HD DVDs and Blur rays, nothing wrong with HD DVDs, just more storage on blurays. I guess that was why it won.

Blu Ray won because Sony bribed the studios (to the tune of hundreds of millions) to support their format.

Sony remembered the Betamax as well and didn't want a repeat performance.

Turns out it was a hollow victory though as now more and more are moving to streaming.

Microsoft and Toshiba supported HD DVD and backed it...that's exactly when I knew that Blu-Ray would win.
