looking at an 02 firehawk w/ pitting block?
so i cam across an 02 hawk for sale with only 6k miles. looks nice but i see this with the pics:
it states that at in 2002 @ ~3k miles the car was bought back because the "entire engine block is pitting and corroding"
wtf does that mean and wtf would cause this at such a low miles??

while i don't doubt what you stated in your answer could cause this issue i doubt that it is the cause in this case. the car is in central upstate ny so there would be no high salt content. and i have a feeling that the pitting/corrosion is internal... would they recall the car just because of corrosion on the block externally?????

could also be the quality of aluminum. If the foundry that made the block/aluminum used a dirty aluminum yes this could happen and would have to be fixed under warranty

Unless you can look inside the engine I wouldnt buy it. When aluminum starts to pit and corrode bad it will crack.

If the engine was replaced, then go for it. Could have been replaced with an updated motor.

Not neccessarily. Iowa salts the fucking shit out of our roads. And pours salt water on all the bridges. BUT, one year we ran out of salt...because they over fucking used it on pointless snow accumulations. And there was a hell of a system comming our way. No salt place could supply us, so we ordered from a company in canada and the shit was black. I was told it was just ash? Non corrosive, just dirty as fuck and worked twice as good.

I guess no one read the disclosure. The car had 3000 miles on it when it was bought back. It was owned only 2 months. No way that salt on the roads would do that.
