Junior Stock Drag Racing - When Stock Was Hot

Back at the birth of NHRA Stock class racing, the cars were indeed very close to stock. Here's where today's index racers all come from.As drag racing took hold across the country in the late '50s and early '60s, there was one category the NHRA had no idea how to handle: the Stock classes. Since the whole purpose of hot rodding is modification, and the more the better, stock cars didn't fit the template. In these early years, the NHRA viewed its Stock classes as strictly entry-level competition for beginners who would quickly graduate to modifieds, and HOT ROD seldom even bothered to publish the results. The Stockers were the show-fillers, the redheaded stepchildren of the drag racing scene.
