if you really want to know what to get i suggest you go to ebay and go into the mp3 player section and do a search for broken... that should really help you decide

I got my fiance' the Zune for her birthday. That bitch is sweet. Much nicer than the I-Pod. Can do everything the I-Pod can with a bigger, much clearer screen and it also has an FM tuner which I-Pod doesn't. Now I want one. I can't use hers. Friggin thing is pink.

Both of them require you to use their respective proprietary softwares to download music and you have to pay for each individual song... If you get something like a Toshiba Gigabeat or a Creative Zen Vision M you can use Napster or Audiogalaxy Rhapsody or even Yahoo! Music to get unlimited downloads for a fixed monthly fee (usually $15/month). They'll hold just as much as either the Zune or iPod.
The only real drawback I see is you won't be able to download video like you can from iTunes or from Zune's downloader. I use my Gigabeat for music only, so it doesn't really matter to me.

You can buy them individually, but the 15$ a month is the way to go.
