    Arrow I'm planning a selfsufficent wilderness camp(pics)

I've wanted to do this for a while now, not only for recreation because this sort of thing interests me, but also in case shit hits the fan, such as anarchy, zombie virus outbreak, etc.

My property backs up to US Army Corps of Engineers land, which is expansive, and largely untouched by humans except for a service trail cut to maintain the storm drain pipes originating from my subdivision. These service trails are approximately five to seven meters wide, re-cut once a year, and otherwise rarely used.

I selected the site for numerous reasons, such as being well hidden from view even at close distances, close enough to civilization to make foraging for modern supplies easy, far enough from civilization to be left alone with an abundance of natural game, adjacent to a water source, natural limited access to the site, high ground to prevent flooding, etc.

I drew these maps/plans using both my memory of the area as well as satellite images from google maps. The area is quite thickly wooded, and the only areas visible by satellite imaging were the service trails and certain parts of the river.

As you can see, the site I selected is a natural island created as a result of the river forking due to a sharp turn.

That is the general area of the camp. As you can see, thick foliage and topography block any line of site view from the southern and eastern directions, which lead to my subdivision. To the North and West extends thick forest for miles (The area of my town, before suburban development, was nicknamed "The Thousand Acre Woods" by locals).

In the following picture you can see the general layout of the campsite.

Keep in mind the camp will be built entirely using the forest itself. It's not like I'm going to go to Home Depot and carry 2x4s and plywood sheets into the forest.

    1. Main living structure - Where I will sleep. Opening facing east to catch early morning sun rays.
    2. Storage structure - For food, tools, supplies
    3. Initial survival shelter - to sleep in if needed while constructing the camp. Opening also facing east.
    4. Lookout - High platform situated among trees to serve as a lookout.
    5. Central fire pit - For warmth, cooking, light
    6. Palisade wall - To hide view of light emanating from the camp and the view of the camp itself, security from woodland creatures
    7. Access point 1 - deadfall log
    8. Access point 2 - deadfall log
    9. Access point 3 - Shallows
    10. Deep water - Contains debris, useful for fishing (number in wrong place, guess I didn't save, supposed to be in dark area of river)

What do you guys think? I'm going tomorrow to survey the site in depth and begin constructing the initial shelter. I'd like to hear your thoughts and input. Many minds is always better than one.

Lights can share a sleeping bag with me in the main structure.

You can sleep in the food storage structure. Have fun with your new bear friends.

    Couple of questions?

    1) How much elevation of said island off of water? have you research flood levels for said river/creek/what ever body of water? Heavy rain = flooding that is indicated on your drawling. this can be somewhat compensated if your fort/mickey mouse club house is built on fortified stilts.
    2) Do yo plan on having any self defenses? MG's, Bows and arrows, catipults, etc... Must have something to fight off Zombies or the future moochers, look out is find but it works both ways.
    3) A shitter? where? enough said.
    4) escape routes? Mass Zombies or moochers can over run you easily. Remember "the harder you make it to get in, the harder it is to get out"
    5) Do you really know how to fish, hunt, start a fire with out lighter fluid and matches?
    6) A garden, you do need some greens.

wait why am I telling you this, makes it harder to take it away from you because you didn't invite me to join....forget all above

What good is a lookout platform when you admitted that the woods to south and hill to northeast block all of your immediate vision? And the natural trail is where if someone was going to walk, they would. And it funnels them RIGHT to you. Horrible location.

    1. The Island is high ground. The river normally is about 4 or 5 feet below it's banks. When the area is flooded, The flood plain in the drawing reaches up to two feet in depth, while the island is still far above this.
    2. Yes
    3. At least 200 yards from the river
    4. I was thinking a zip line for this sort of thing, considering the island is highground
    5. Yes
    6. Yeah I know. We already grow our own vegetables at my house, I'm pretty experienced with that sort of thing.
