well from California, you could take the coast hwy up thru Oregon and Washington and on thru to Vancouver, then hang a right and head east and cruise thru Southern Canada, then back down thru Montana/Idaho, Colorado etc.
I plan to take such a trip in ayear or so, with always the thought that it would be in late summer/early fall, when it rains the least or so I'm told by my Oregon farm girl g/f.
just to throw another option out there you might not have considered, and ohhh if your roadtrip takes in a visit thru Big Sur (get a massage) plus also the Monterey Peninsula, (scenic drive Pebble Beach, etc.) if you've never done that it's fantastic. And you must visit Pt. Lobos National Park, what a great place!

I would go down to Miami Florida or Key west. It will be nice and warm there.

Honestly, just get in the car and drive south or southwest. I'm a big fan of Colorado, Montana, that area. Some of the most beautiful and relaxing places on earth, yet theres lots of stuff to do too.
