I know white people who don't the know different between "that" and "there".

Conversely, I know black people who pronounce "ask" properly.

It has little to do with race, and much more with upbringing and education in my opinion.

I disagree with that. There is definitely a conscious effort among a large segment of black American society to 'be different' from what they perceive as 'white America'. Many black people still consider it 'selling out' if a black person acts in too much of a 'mainstream' manner. Some of it is done under the banner of 'having pride in our heritage' but seriously, how is a hip hop culture representative of any past heritage? It's a very recent, very artificial cultural choice. I know as a middle class white American male I am the ultimate oppressor of all others, and I don't know the flaws of my own socioeconomic segment. But still...

Hey...I'm black and when black folks talk to me like that, I am totally lost. Then they tell me I talk white. I will never understand why some black folks talk in this manner...or why they tell me I talk funny. But I grew up in an affluent community that kind of resembles 90210. Where I live now, I have had nosey neighbors ask why most of my friends are white and why I don't hang out where I currently live...and always hang out in white suburbia. It's simple...I grew up in white suburbia, and that is where I feel the most comfortable and safe.

This is exactly my point. Speaking our national language properly shouldn't be seen as 'being white'. Conversely, degenerating it into something totally different shouldn't be required to 'be black'.
