    i need a quick tip

so i might be getting a 79 z28 from a friend for a grand. well the car is a all go no show kinda car. it has hooker headers eddlebrock carb and intake accel destrbutor and has a large comp cam. the car sat for a few years not long after all that stuff was put on. it starts up every try and hauls ass but it smokes some. it may need new rings, do you need to machine the cylinders if you put in new rings on? i plan on swapping the whole drive train into my 75

depends on how much smoke it blows, if its only doing it sometimes i'd say, no you wouldn't have to machine the cyls

How long does it smoke and how bad? May not be the rings....may be the valve stem seals. Also, if it's the same oil that's been in it for 2 years....it's probably like water by now....and will burn off quickly....probably foul the plugs first.

Agree! Valve stem seals can leak a little when new too. Normal for old Chevy motors. It will go away after it gets warmed up to temp a few times. Changing the oil is good idea also..

X3 if its been sitting around for a while the valve stem seals are probably dried out.... do the valve stem seals first since its easy and you wont have to tear it all apart and see what happens

all the fluids were changed. he said it has 100 octane leaded fuel in it right now to burn off some of the crap inside it. the car hauls ass, it chirps tires through the gears and wants to go sideways when you floor it. its a light grey smoke. not white. the engine was fresh before it sat. it was gonna be a drag car
