I hate airlines!!!!
Begin rant: My mom was flying out from chicago on united airlines, and scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles and about 11:00. She checks her bags, gets here tickets, gets through security and gets to the counter to check that the flight is on time. The lady at the counter says she is too late that she has been bumped off the flight and has been moved to "standby" the flight had not even taken off yet, and she was an hour EARLY. She told her she need to be in the terminal a minimum of 2 hours or else they bump. Moral of the story they double booked the flight, and need an excuse.....now she sits and waits for something to open up so she can fly here on the ticket that I bought for her 4 months ago.........end rant.....

I am I didn't pay for a ticket 4 months ago to have her show up and them tell her she's been bumped because she wasn't there 2 hours prior.. Never in my life have I ever been in the terminal 2 hours prior and gotten bumped off. The airlines fucked up and they know it, they double booked.

I would be expecting a bumping; When they refunded your money and gave her a new ticket it is now at the airlines leisure as to when to fly her because now she is a "guest" of the airline, not a "paying customer" They (guest) are on a lower priority.
1) 1st Class
2) Everyone else paying
3) Crew deadheading
4) Standby < ----ppl bumped or missed connections
5) Guest of Airline <------these are those tickets they try to get you to take to Hawaii in exchange for giving up your seat for someone else because they overbooked. NEVER EVER NEVER TAKE THESE. IT IS A SCAM!!
Good Luck, I hope see makes it on the next one.
p.s. I used to work in the airlines

wtf that sucks! two words, U.S. AIRWAYS! ive flown every other airline that flies in the continental united states, (as well as air canada) and they are the BEST by far. Their tickets may be an extra 40$ but i'll gladly pay it, this kinda crap never happens to me no matter where i go on U.S. Airways. hell yea end of rant

When I was flying back and forth to Houston every week (did that for almost 4 months) I timed it so I was checking in about 35-40 minutes before the plane was supposed to start boarding and after security would get to the terminal just as they were starting to board. Trust me, flying every week the last thing I wanted to do was waste any more time than I had to in an airport.
That said, I have never heard of having to be at the terminal 2 hours before takeoff but I never flew with United either. I mostly took Continental, and while they also overbook flights I was never bumped even if I showed up 10 minutes after the plan began to board.
