Question How would I go about volunteering for hurricane re

I live in southwest Louisiana and staying at a home that is like thirty seconds away from the city fire station. I got this whole college volunteer syndrome kicking in and I want to do what I can to help. Only problem is I do not who to ask about where I could go. I know the fire fighters do a lot of road clearing and I wanted to see if I could help out. Really anything will do I just want to do something so I do not go bored out of my mind. Would I just call the fire department and ask if they need help or call someone else like a local news media outlet?

Probably a little late on the draw, hoss. I'd contact the local (or closest) Red Cross and let them know you're interested in helping. Maybe the local volunteer FD. You'll probably get put to work doing heavy lift manual work (sandbags, carrying ice/water, etc), but at least it's something.
