How Do a diesel engine run with no sparkplugs?

I have always wondered just how a diesel engine ran and there's no plugs to fire the fuel mixture? can someone tell me how it works.

Diesels run at a very high compression and use this pressure and heat to ignite the mixture. On cold starts some diesels need a glow plug to get the fuel to ignite.

and the combustion chamber is actually the piston itself. the head itself is actually flat. at least on the powerstroke 6.0s i see torn down at work all day lol
