you can only own automatic weapons manufactured before 1986, so there is a set number of automatic weapons available to sell/own which drives the price up. up until the 1930's anyone could own fully automatic weapons, but gangsters like al capone became to well armed so the gov't clamped down on full auto's and instituted a $200 transfer tax that is still in effect today.

The government doesn't want us to be well armed, that is why they are so damned expensive. Look at what happened in Hollywood in '97 with those heavily armed/armored bank robbers. That was some scary shit.
