Man holding a cat and a gun surrenders outside Wawa near Quakertown
The Morning Call
A man waved a semi-automatic handgun at customers in the Wawa store on Route 309 north of Quakertown this morning while he held a cat in one hand and his school-age daughter stood near him, according to emergency dispatches and a witness.
The man, who has not been identified by police, surrendered after holding customers and store employees at bay for nearly a half hour starting around 6 a.m.
Southbound Route 309 was temporarily shut in the area of the Wawa, located in front of the Target store in Richland Township.
A state trooper at the scene said the man was in custody at the Dublin barracks and a news release would be issued later today. His daughter remained at the gas station with troopers, who said they were contacting other family members to come get her. The man's gun also remained on the ground near the gas pumps and a state police vehicle.
Witness Mark Shumbris, 36, of Whitehall Township, said he pulled into the Wawa to get gas, and he immediately noticed the man sitting on the island near the pumps with his daughter, whom he estimated to be about 10 years old.
"I thought he was a vagrant," Shumbris said. "I figured he needed a ride because he had a big duffle bag, and he's holding a cat."
Shumbris said the man then pointed the gun toward him and said, "You have a full tank of gas. What are you doing here?"
Shumbris said he backed away and attempted to enter the Wawa, but employees had locked the doors and motioned for him to go to the side of the building. He then took refuge outside the Chick-fil-A building and called 911.
"Honestly, I didn't know what he was going to do," Shumbris said. "He could have easily taken my car. He just kept saying, 'You have a full tank of gas. What are you doing here?'"
While waiting for police to arrive, Shumbris said a couple more cars pulled in for gas but sped away when the man pointed the gun at them.
As Wawa employees watched from inside the locked store and Shumbris and other customers watched from a distance, state and local police from Bucks and Lehigh counties converged in front of the Wawa at Route 309 and Pumping Station Road.
Shumbris said he remained on the phone with the 911 center throughout the incident, and he saw the man and girl giving the cat a drink of water.
"He kept saying, 'I can still shoot with a cat in my arm,'" Shumbris said. "The last thing he said to (his daughter) was, 'Do you want to go to school today?' She was crying. When she said, 'yes,' that's when he laid down in front of my car. And that was it."

He done lost his dern mind thats what happend, who the fuck in their right mind does that kind of thing. I would say shoot his ass, but since his daughter was their it would have been very inapropriate. I think anybody that is going to do something stupid like that should be dropped dead right their.
