i dont think is was the niche that dried up...
it was the bad marketing by gm and excellent marketing by imports, during times when gas was $5+ a gallon.
people jumped off the big bad feel safe in a SUV/TRUCK market into a go green hybrid, faster then crabs off a prostitute.
Sadly cars like the prius do more damage to the planet than a gas hungry SUV like a hummer.

Well - I say it was a niche because I'd say at least 90% of the people that owned these vehicles were definitely people with more money than most(usually people that own businesses, or make 75K/yr+). Now that the niche, as I call it, has worn off, along with a few of the things that you've mentioned, there's no place for the Hummer anymore to stay viable. (including the H3)
How do you figure that? Doesn't a Prius get 3 times the mileage of a Hummer?Last edited by FasstChevys; 05-25-2010 at 11:14 AM.

Batteries - the cost of making and maintaining the batteries is never discussed. 1st gen Prius batteries lasted on 3 yrs before you had to replace all of them. Cost then equal $3500-4500 not counting labor. Now they have manage to increase their life span to about 4-5 yrs and the cost is still around $4500- $5000 for replacement minus cost of labor. Now the unmentioned cost of the batteries......disposal. Batteries are not exactly environmental friendly. And the total irony. The cost to buy a Prius and the "savings" from gas mileage will never be greater then the cost of paying off you clunker and maintaining it over the same life time for each vehicle.
Every time I see a Prius I laugh and yell sucker!!!!!!

Here's another example...
Look at 32 Roadsters, any 50's-70's hot rod/muscle car. Cost 3-5k when they where new. Most still have the crappy 6-15 mpg. Yes it's a lot more expensive to fill a tank, but there in lies inflation. Now even if you replaced engine and drive train with modern stuff you still would make out better financially then ever owning a Prius. Same will come with a H1 or H2. Now they will become collector items and again regain their worth. Never, never, never, ever, ever, ever, ever will a Prius be worth the same as a H1 or H2 in the long run.

Hummers were stupid anyways. Just big overgrown Jeeps...worthless! Let's not forget how many vehicles GM axed just to free up enough money to build those queer things.

Don't insult jeeps like that. They were 3/4 ton tahoes and box shaped colorados. The h1 however was complete pimpdom

I guess I'm the oddball here. I actually liked Hummer a lot. I always thought the H1, H2, and H3 were really cool trucks. Sucks to hear about this. Now, the FJ and the Wrangler really have no other competition. Maybe the Raptor will be their new competitor, not so sure though, since it is a lot bigger than the both of those trucks.

H1's are awesome
H2's are cool if you need a prop for a parody of a rap video.
H3's... the fuck are they even using the Hummer name for this shit anymore

IDK, and neither do you. But I can tell you it just cost over a billion to control a leak in the ocean (which they never really got control of) that is now washing up on our shores and killing the southern fishing economy. The truth is its impossible to get an exact answer on either side.

Bad marketing? They were on road trucks. Made to do nothing but waste money, I live in WI and there were alot of humemrs around here, 5-10 years ago there were more turcks in this state than cars might still be. But how many hummers did i see offroad in the woods, none, how many did i see towing stuff, maybe 2. Its a useless truck bought by rich people just to have a big vehicle when there are other vehicles that can do the same job better for less money. 5 dollars a gallon killed it and there is no marketing stratagey to fight that when your vehicles gets 10 city and 15 freeway.
