I have had it happen, I know how you feel. Get the bank to send you a letter saying the lien on the loan has been paid off. Second, have the bank state in the letter that the title is in transit. Make a copy of the letter and send it to your buyer.

The new owner should be able to request a replacement title with the letter that states tehre is no lien on the car

you can go down to the Division of Motor Vehicle/Registry with the letter showing the lien has been paid and request a duplicate title. (just tell them the old was lost, not that your waiting for it in the mail, or that its damaged {they'll want what's left of it} because they won't allow two titles to be out). I'm not sure how long NC takes to process this. Some states it takes 2 weeks, others I've seen it take months. (Call any auto dealer, they should be able tell the average time it takes them)
