Help with my dad's truck

My dad has a 2001 ford f150 4x4 with the 5.4l ......It starts up fine and idles fine but when you put it in gear it sounds like it is going to shut off and the engine shakes real bad like the A/F ratio is way off. anyone know why this is happening?

Have you checked the coils? IIRC the Triton 5.4 has independent coils like the LSx motors. Check the MAF as well. You may have a vac leak somewhere.

The only time I've ever had an engine shake really bad was when one cyllinder wasn't firing or the timing was off. But whether or not it was in gear wouldn't affect that I wouldn't think.

I wonder if its possible if the problem isn't in the transmission? I am taking a stab and guessin it's auto with this one.

We had an early 90's grand am that had an issue with the tranny. There was a relay or solenoid (cant remember which) on torque converter that was failing. Every now and again coming to a stop, this relay/solenoid wouldn't disengage causing the tranny to stay locked up, in turn stalling the motor. Perhaps there's something similar in that trans.

Or, i could be talking out of my ass. Possibly a bad trans. controller/computer?

a buddy of mine is having the same problem with his 04. Said he was told that the cams were out of spec

Yer talking about the vehicle speed sensor/solenoid I think. I have heard about that too.
