If the cat had been unhappy you would have seen blood. Some times they act like that when you brush them, particularly with the kind of instrument that pulls out loose fur. I'm guessing it sort of "hurts good".

i have one cat that looks almost identical to that. her sister, will spaz out if you rub the same spot, just above her tail. except instead of growling, she starts biting (like she's looking for fleas or something) on her paws.

maybe as an attack kitty..have it hooked up to some mechanism that starts to brush it whenever someone gets close to the front door

That'd work. My granddad had an attack cat, hated Everyone except him. All the kids were scared of her, she'd even hide under the Christmas tree and attack when the kids tried to get their gifts. She barely tolerated my grandma, I remember one time the cat got mad and shit in her house shoe.
