Had something weird happen to me at a gas station last night

So last night I had to stop and get gas about 15minutes from where I live. I pulled up and noticed a hispanic male sitting next to the garbage dumpsters to the right of the building...looked pretty out of place so I made sure to keep an eye on him while I was pumping gas. My windows are really really dark on my truck so I can use it to my advantage when I'm on the other side of the vehicle. I can kind of use it as a shield in a way if that makes sense...I acted completely oblivious and I was even whistling a song while I was standing with my back to the drivers side of my truck while pumping gas and I did that on purpose to look like I didn't have a care in the world. I was using the reflections of the pump to watch what was going on behind me though.

Then it got fun...

The guy I was watching left where he was sitting, snuck around some pumps, and hid behind the pump that was directly behind my back probably about 10-12 feet from the passenger side of my truck...he was rounding the corner coming towards the tailgate of my truck when I turned around and made eye contact with him and he went running back towards the store.

I did call the local police department and report him for being suspicious for obvious reasons...I didn't see signs of a gun or knife but thats the first time I've had somebody actually try to sneak up on me before like that. I was pretty mad about it when I got home and stayed upset through most of the night honestly. My wife actually said something that kind of made me feel a little better about it. She said something to the effect that be glad it was you and not somebody else because you usually pay attention to stuff like that when others don't. So that helped a little, but I'm still upset it happened obviously.

Just thought I would share my story...always be aware of whats going on around you my friends. It can happen in both good areas and bad areas.

couple things.....I try to always be aware of people around me. You can't afford not to these days because anyone can be a nutcase. Another thing I do is really try to limit my odds of shit like that. I very rarely, if ever, go to gas stations at night. I'm not talking an hour after dark but like 10pm or later. I also stay out of the shitty parts of cities. There's nothing the hood has to offer me that's worth me taking a trip there. Even areas that technically aren't the hood but share the same crimes....I steer clear of them. A new restaurant or something like that in an area they're trying to build back up....build it up first then I'll think about it...until then I'll eat somewhere I won't get shot in the face over a pair of sneakers. Nothing is foolproof but I just try to play the odds to my favor.

...glad you're alright! ...did the right thing by letting the police know, it gives a "data point" to them at least so they know what's going on in that area... POS was maybe a panhandler, maybe worse, ...don't let them get close to you!

Yup, you've got to do more than just defensive driving these days. Defensive living is required. I keep my eyes open and always pay attention to my surroundings, day or night. It seems as though the loitering and homeless population is growing at a fast rate.

Way to handle yourself and spook that fool. I'm sure he's looking over his own shoulder much more right now. Whenever i'm out somewhere at night I feel like i'm always ready for a fight waiting for somebody to try something.

I was actually reading today that they released 2015 numbers and they have dropped even more.

I think it's more of a case of where the crimes happen and what type than how many. Crime has moved more into the suburbs instead of just being limited to the "bad areas" of towns.

That certainly appears to be accurate. At least in the areas that I frequent...break in's, robberies, etc appear to be on the rise in the burbs but violent crimes are a different story.
