    Guns and Ammo

Well it cost me 7000 Peanut Butter Cookies...but look up....there is a new Guns and Ammo section Ed is building for us.
I have been busy with two Guns Equipment/Ammo specific sponsors getting us discounts for LS1.COM members...so bear with us as this new section is created.

Ed do you like crunchy or smooth?

So guns & ammo takes precedence over a bbq/grilling section?

Looking forward to it -- I already have a few "gun care" questions in mind for the new forum. Thanks, Sarge.

See that 5.56 NATO Lithuanian Military 62gr. SS109 Penetrator? That stuff is the best 5.56 I have ever shot. It is hot. I am trying to get a bulk buy deal on that stuff.

I just got a new AR. Could you elaborate a lil on the difference between .223 and 5.56? I like the price on the Hornady TAP 223. This stuff any good? http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalo...3-556-fmj-ammo

Well yes, and Ed was probably fearful if Sarge didn't get a gun forum, he may go off the deep end and go hunting for Ed with all of his guns. Would you rather say no to Sarge and his guns or Orion and his apron?

the 5.56 casing is a tenth of a millimeter longer, but that doesnt really matter. I've also heard the casing is a little thicker. But the important thing is that the 5.56 runs 10-20,000 PSI higher than the .223, If your AR is marked 5.56, or 5.56/.223, then you can run either. if it says .223, you can only run that.

a .223 receiver is not made to handle the increased pressure...can you get away with it in a pinch? probably, but its serious wear on the gun.

what brand is yours? most modern ones can handle either.

I have a Delton chambered for 5.56 and stamped on the barrel so it will handle either.

too minor to matter, just a bit of shoulder angle, but are interchangeable

I shoot both out of my AR which is marked 5.56

    Saw this in another forum:

    * The cartridge casings for both calibers have basically the same length and exterior dimensions.
    * The 5.56 round, loaded to Military Specification, typically has higher velocity and chamber pressure than the .223 Rem.
    * The 5.56 cartridge case may have thicker walls, and a thicker head, for extra strength. This better contains the higher chamber pressure. However, a thicker case reduces powder capacity, which is of concern to the reloader.
    * The 5.56mm and .223 Rem chambers are nearly identical. The difference is in the "Leade". Leade is defined as the portion of the barrel directly in front of the chamber where the rifling has been conically removed to allow room for the seated bullet. It is also more commonly known as the throat. Leade in a .223 Rem chamber is usually .085". In a 5.56mm chamber the leade is typically .162", or almost twice as much as in the 223 Rem chamber.
    * You can fire .223 Rem cartridges in 5.56mm chambers with this longer leade, but you will generally have a slight loss in accuracy and velocity over firing the .223 round in the chamber with the shorter leade it was designed for.
    * Problems may occur when firing the higher-pressure 5.56mm cartridge in a .223 chamber with its much shorter leade. It is generally known that shortening the leade can dramatically increase chamber pressure. In some cases, this higher pressure could result in primer pocket gas leaks, blown cartridge case heads and gun functioning issues.
    * The 5.56mm military cartridge fired in a .223 Rem chamber is considered by SAAMI (Small Arm and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) to be an unsafe ammunition combination.

    yup, you can do either.

and like Sandman said, the throat on your barrel is longer, but the only time that comes into play is in high performance stuff, when the guys want the bullet to sit perfectly.

The good thing with a longer throat is you can shoot more projectiles. See mines short, I am limited, I cant go over 75 grains. There's also a company out there that makes long skinny bullets, they don't taper as quickly towards the front, they're for long high speed stuff. Those are too long for me, the casing wont seat all the way.

I see the guys have pretty much explained it.....But I'll give you my version...223 goes POP....5.56 goes Kaboom. Also if you have a 5.56 barrel .223 will not be as accurate as 5.56....
