This is a very good example of a drummer playing match grip open handed.

Match grip: Holding drum sticks in left and right hands the same way parallel to each other.

Traditional grip; Holding the drumstick in the left hand at a right angle to the right hand, i.e., as you see most marching band snare drummers hold their sticks (ala Thomas Lang in post #21).

Traditional kit playing: Drummer uses right hand crossed over the left to play the hi-hats and other pieces.

Open handed playing: Left hand plays left side of kit while right hand plays right side of kit.

if you haven't been able to locate them I attached a video of casiopea from 1984. I got to see these guys play at a little club in Venice Ca called the "Come Back Inn" back in 1982. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfMzZZbIAlU&feature=related[/ame]

I wasn't rating just adding another rock drummer to the list. I know that there are people who don't know that he plays the drums or even that he plays left handed.

you cant really "rate" these guys. Theres way too many variables. So many talented players out there, its a disservice to rate one guy ahead of the other. There are however OVERRATED drummers. Travis Barker is overrated. Good drummer, but overrated. Probably because hes the only guy from blink 182 that can play his instrument worth a shit.

Travis barker has phenominal stick control. I realize this doesn't mean anything if you're not a drummer but trust me, dudes bad ass.

    what about Tommy Lee?

I definitely agree. I like to see what the drummer has to offer the group when playing. How well they all complement, work together, play off each other, etc.

Man, so many names coming back to me now, and so many new guys to listen too.

Haha, I'm not the only one in this land of men who rates Phil Collins highly despite the easy-listening reputation.

I'm a HUGE fan of Motley Crue. IMO, Tommy Lee is an awesome "show" drummer. His stick twirling and drum kit flipping were always cool eye candy. He can keep a strong beat and can throw in some good fills. I really like his bass drum/snare drum simultaneous hits for a more powerful sounding snare (IE: Kickstart My Heart - Good for "arena rock"). And I like his style. But I don't know that I would consider his one of the "best" drummers out there.

Oh I should be a shamed to leave out the great Muppet Animal. It wouldn't be a good conversation if Animal was not in it.
