Unhappy Government Bans the Sale of Kids' Dirt Bikes

The AMA is pleading with its members, motorcycling enthusiasts, and general gearheads across the land to get on the horn and work to lift the ban on the sales of kids’ motorcycles before it has a crushing effect on both the industry and the sport of dirt biking.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 had wording in it that essential banned the sales of these vehicles which are vital for the continued growth of youth riding and competition. Although bikes that have already been sold can be raced and ridden, it does nothing for people wanting to purchase one now. As of February 10th, you simply can’t.

Sure we’re not much focused on motorcycles or dirt bikes around here but, if they can essentially outlaw those vehicles it makes sense that they can outlaw the stuff that we really love and that’s a chilling thought.

Read the release below before you head home and smash the lock off the liquor cabinet, and then pick up the phone and start sending e-mails to get this thing fixed. These riders and enthusiasts are our brothers and sisters. They need our help.

Here is the full text of the AMA press release:

As you may know by now, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) has effectively banned the sale of youth off-highway vehicles (OHVs) as of Feb. 10, 2009. The AMA is issuing a repeated call for action to help reverse the potentially devastating effect this could have on the sport of OHV recreation. We are also asking for your help, as promoters and club leaders, to spread the word to your club members, racers and fans to encourage them to get involved.

While this move could cripple the future of the sport, it does appear that there may be relief for the use of motorcycles purchased prior to Feb. 10. The Congressional Research Service (CRS) has compiled a list of prohibited acts in the CPSIA. Neither riding a previously purchased motorcycle nor promoting a race that includes those motorcycles is included on that list.

Still, immediate attention is needed to end this ban on the sale and manufacture of youth model OHVs. In addition to the efforts the AMA is putting in on.

    * Contact your representatives in Congress by using the Take Action button in the Issues and Legislation section of the AMA website.
    * Write the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) directly to encourage them to exclude youth model OHVs here.

just another case of the government knowing what's better for you more than you do. Maybe they can outlaw guns so we can't fight back, then they can outlaw all religions other than christianity, and the pope will become president. If they do all that then they officially will be the exact reason why this country was founded.

The problem will take car of itself... I suppose the kids shewing on the dirt bikes also chew on the under-carraige of cars and full size motorcycles too... This is too insane to not be repealed through simple common sense.

If a kid is old enough to turn it on and ride, the kid is old enough to not chew on the paint.

When I wqas a kid our first house had lead paint on it (built in 1959) and when we changed the color in 1962 I was four years old and my parents told me not to eat the paint chips or I would get sick and die. I was then given a paint scraper and told to scrape the paint off so my Dad could paint over it.

At a punctuation point, some kittens got into the paint flakes and got sick and died. It was quite a lesson for a four year old kid.

Our society today is simply too concerned with banning stuff and apparently not concerned at all about teaching people what to do and what not to do.

The "ban" appears to be quite temporary until the testing of the paint on these ATVs can be completed. The solution will likely be a large warning label and discaimer to absolve the manufacturers of any liability due to parental negligence.

Great, ban something that gets the kids out of the house being active and doing things to stay fit... Give the kids another Wii or load them up with the newest version of WOW online.

It's all just another bullshit excuse for getting 'polluting vehicles' out of commission!

This is the same nonsense law that can potentially destroy thrift and consignment stores since they will have to have EVERYTHING FOR CHILDREN tested for lead.

Used toys, clothes, games, bikes, etc. Insanity.

All because cheap, Chinese manufactured junk was coming in with all manner of toxins in it.

So some idiot decides to save us all by drafting a law that has as much application to reality as a Star Trek convention.

Don't worry though. I'm sure at some point in the next few years we'll find that no one actually NEEDS a car with more than 200HP, being harmful to the environment, pedestrians, noise pollution, and such. So we'll get another genius to draft us a law protecting us from them.

Didn't CA almost get a law at one point proposing to crush all old cars, including classics, because they were gross polluters?

who wants to go start a new country with me? We'll pick out some country that is about 100 years behind in technology and we'll go in and wipe them out and start our own country. Well, we won't really wipe them out at first. We'll give them little pieces of land and pick a clever name for it like "reservation" then we'll go in and kill a bunch more of them until there's only a few of them left. To keep them happy we'll let them sell tax exempt tobacco and open casino's or something.
