Is this good computer RAM?
I got a little extra cash and figured i would upgrade my computer. (Looking at getting Vista soon also).
I went to http://www.crucial.com and ran their scan and got this info for my computer:
# Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
# Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
# Available Memory Slots: 2
# Number of Banks: 4
# Dual Channel Support: Yes
# CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
# CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz Model 3, Stepping 4
# CPU Speed: 4958 MHz
Currently installed:
512MB
DDR2 PC2-4100
512MB
DDR2 PC2-4100
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
This is the kind it recommended for me:
Part No. CT389516 1GB, 240-pin DIMM Upgrade for a Dell Dimension 8400 Series System
Price: $79.98 for the 2 gigs i would be buying.

What's the motherboard model and I'll check it out.
667 is typically the highest unless you're abolutely sure your MOBO DIMM Timings can be adjusted through User Defined. (Bios)
Although most MOBO's have aggressive user defined, it is too much.
Intel does not clock nor do they like too much timing.

Here's the Intel specs:
http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/d925xecv2/
Memory Four 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMM sockets
Support for DDR2 533 MHz and DDR2 400 MHz DIMMs
Support for up to 4 GB of system memory
So it looks like DDR 533 PC4200 is your max memory.
Now you need to know the CAS tRAS tRCD tRP which are the timings.
I highly recommend you give OCZ a call or email them. They reply fairly fast.
They will tell you the exact max timings for your board. You can't really deviate from their recommendations.

Maximum Memory Capacity: 1536MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1.5GB
Available Memory Slots: -1
Number of Banks: 1
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Model 4, Stepping 1
CPU Speed: 3200 MHz
Currently installed memory:
512MBDDR PC3200 1GB
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
This is why I would tell you to never trust that crucial test run, apperently I have -1 slots for ram and the MANUFACTURER put a 512 MB PC3200 stick in my motherboard when it can only take PC2700, lol, I alos bought that extra 1GB stick and if i remember correctly it is PC3400. Just to warn you that program is not always accurate, it is easier just to bring you comp down to a local computer shop and get them to get the right ram for you if you don't know what your doing.

Like I said captain, I used to work at future shop, known as Best Buy in the states. Just bring your tower down there, and say I am looking to upgrade my ram to 3Gigs. They will grab an associate and he will show you what RAM you need and then once you know what kind you need you can proceed to buy from there or you can go back home and buy it off the internet now that you know what type you need. It is as easy as that. These guys are just gonna confuse you with all the timing crap ... it is better referred to as clock speed if you know it as that

Memory is absolutely critical for your computer to run at it's best.
You should get to know it.
Reboot and press F3 to take you into system Bios. sometimes F8 & F1 works.
When you get into Bios use your keyboard to navigate across the top.
You will see Main first and this tells you what your system is including the AA Number of your board which tells you the revision. This is important.
Then Navigate all the way across to see your parameters and pick all of them and navigate down.
When you get to your memory timings you will see some numbers after User Defined that read something like this:
As an example mine is:
5
2
3
2
Now this is the best I can get and this is automatic.
Now when you add or take away memory modules your DDR rate changes to say mine goes automatic to DDR 320 (2.5 Gigs of PC3200) because my Intel board sees all this whopping memory and adjusts it lower because this is what it wants to do.
I would have problems if I pushed it too DDR 400 in user defined (Bios) which is my memory rate ... so I leave it there unless I play with the page filing in advanced setings in the Windows OS.
Add Vista and my new seagate 7200.10 with the new perpendicular recording and I'm pushing the system beyond what it wants to do. so I let it do what it wants to do.
Big Boy ASUS and other clockable boards allow you to completely deviate from recommended settings and push voltages to beyond.
It's all artificial intelligence and will talk to you if you know it.
Oh and F10 to exit BiosLast edited by eddierox; 05-23-2007 at 02:35 PM.

Is DDR2 SDRAM PC2-6400 timed at 667mhz? I'm asking because that scanner tool said 6400 is the fastest I can have but i know my ram is at 667mhz.
