The GM IPO wasn't supposed to happen until after several quarters of profit, not this soon.
A couple of things are rumored about this whole deal.
1. The IPO is rolled out just in time for November elections so Obama can point to something.
2. Whitacre got canned because of this comment:
"We want the government out. Period. We don't want to be known as government motors," he said in Traverse City, Mich.
If GM got rid of government intervention, their sales probably would pick up.
I know lots of people who have said they would not buy a GM or Chrysler simply because of the government/UAW takeover.

Agree
And I'm one of them, not sure if I'll buy new again from GM. I hate paying thieves (UAW) that had shit given to them instead of earning it and investing in it while screwing over the investors that actually put money into the company and got told to STFU and sitdown and eat your shit sandwich and luv it. I know some members here are members of unions and it's not directed personally towards you, just that IMHO Unions as a whole have morphed into a corrupt organization that enslaves workers. The Mob used the same tactics that the unions use today. Would love to see a RICO trial on all of them. Case in point - In order to accept a job you must join a union, pay a portion of your earnings into the union, then have no say as to what the union does with your "donation" = BS - that's called extortion!!
Unions had their purpose in the Industrial Revolution, today they are a nuisance to buisiness. Current work place laws have come from the unions of that era.
Business leaving U.S. = High Corp tax laws + Unions vs Low Corp Tax laws - Cheap Labor / No Unions = More Profit for company. And Profit is what everyone wants (Don't kid yourselves if you say otherwise)
No wonder companies are leaving the U.S.
