GM Recall: V6 Sedans 1997-2003
DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp is recalling nearly 1.5 million Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac mid-sized cars due to a potential leak of engine oil that could cause an engine fire.
The recall applies to the 1997-2003 Buick Regal; 1998-2003 Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala; 1998-99 Oldsmobile Intrigue; and 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, GM said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
A total of 1,497,516 vehicles, all equipped with a 3.8 liter engine, are involved in the recall.
GM said some of the vehicles have a condition in which drops of engine oil may be deposited on the exhaust manifold under hard braking.
That could start a small fire that could spread to a plastic spark plug wire channel and beyond, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire, NHTSA said.
GM dealers will remove the plastic spark plug retention channel and install two new spark plug wire retainers free of charge.

friend of mine got this recall quite a while ago I think, but it might have been something else. I do know it had to do with oil leaking onto the manifold and being a fire hazard though

not for nothing, but i've never seen motor oil on hot exhaust actually start a fire either though. Not saying its impossible, but believe me some models of car actually have the engine oil drain right onto exhaust during an oil change. The shit burns right off without igniting.

Must be a bad leak to actually catch on fire... maybe its a cover up for a fuel line or injector leak.

The general consensus is the either the fuel lines drying out from running several inches above the rear manifold and or th o rings in the connections drying out and the fuel getting on the rear manifold. the couple I've seen in the local yards seem to confirm it.
Somebody on another board was saying it fuel spray on the blower

So I didn't see it mentioned, but does this not apply to the Firebird even though it had a 3.8?
My g/f has a Firebird with a 3.8, so thats why I'm wondering.
