G4: Two guys and a day and a half...

I am impressed with how much can be accomplished by two guys that have a real work ethic. They started with a bare patch of dirt and a truck full of tools on Monday around 8:00 a.m. and by Tuesday at 1:30 the building was ready for roof trusses. Trusses are being delivered this morning and should be all up by noon according to the contractor.

We are out of space and I really need to get the trailer under roof for the winter and also when it is not in use during the summer months. The building is 40' x 60' and will have a full 12' ceiling. This will allow me to move project cars around and open up some additional work space for the Cutlass restoration. We will also be storing my father's trailer and at least one car for a friend. I am not worried about concrete this year, that can be done later. I'll just have to come up with something for the garage doors to seal against as I want to keep critters out.

Wish I had that kind of skill, I have the lot space and could probably come up with the materials easily, just can't afford the labor and carpentry isn't my forte. Being a surveyor by trade, the layout portion would be easy though.

Looks like they are doing good work.

I am guessing they are Amish? My grandpa had a shed built exactly like that. They worked the same as you are describing.

So is this being built like a pole barn? If you dont know what I mean, it means that treated posts arent set in concrete, they're just sunk several feet in the ground onto a brick base, and surrounded by a packed in filling (including dirt). Or were these set on a foundation?

No foundation or footers -- pole barn construction as you described. However, they first dump dry concrete mix in the hole after setting the post, then fill the rest with dirt. The building will outlast me by many years and the plan is to simply utilize it for storage. I may throw down a concrete floor sometime in the next couple of years.

Thats interesting with the concrete, as concrete can actually hurt treated lumber and decrease its lifespan. They may not have used treated lumber though. Either way, that will be sturdy building and should serve it's purpose well for you.

Here are some shots of the site prep. We started by clearing trees and installing a longer sluice at the road in order to have a nice wide opening for getting the car trailer in and out of the property. After we cleared out the trees and brush to open up the access, my father-in-law cut the pad and driveway in with a dozer. We then brought in 20 loads of fill to build up the drievway and added an additional sluice part way up to drain any runoff to an adjacent creek.

Thanks! I have to upload the next batch of pics. At the end of day 3, the roof was finished. They'll be back on Tuesday to start the sides and, unless they hit a snag, should be fone by Friday.

The steel and trusses arrived around 8:45 on Wednesday. Everything was unloaded and the trusses were in place before 11:00 a.m. Dawn and I went away for a couple of hours in the afternoon and when we returned they were installing the last couple of roofing panels. The crew finished the day by installing the ridge and end caps. There were 6 guys on site and they worked non-stop. The foreman ran around (literally ran) keeping the guys up top supplied. One would whistle when he needed something and it would get thrown up to him and caught... almost no conversation between them. Very different from other construction crews where everyone is yelling, bitching, and doing more ball scratching than actual work.

Looks good. That should actually be a pretty economical building the way it's being built.

Metal paneling for the sides and vinyl soffit for the eaves. The sides will be dark gray on the bottom and then blue the rest of the way up. That'll go with our house which is also blue, even though it's 1/4 mile up the road we wanted to stay color coordinated. Seems like 90% of the steel buildings in our area are either tan and green or tan and maroon -- we'll be different.

Yes, they do. Garage doors will arrive tomorrow or Friday and they'll be all done. I'll then get a couple loads of fill delivered to bring everything up to grade along with some gravel. We're going to run a drain tile on the uphill side and tie in laterals for the gutter downspouts. Add some temporary lights and door sills and it'll be ready for "moving day".
