Ford Killed Mercury

IMO mercury started releasing pretty interesting models recently, well more interesting than ford

i don't really think it's a big loss. everything in the mercury lineup is little more than a rebadged ford (chevrolet/gmc). the way i see it ford is streamlining their production lines because they see financial trouble ahead for themselves. they'll be able to fairly easily make options packages for the ford vehicles based on the mercury lineup without having to produce another line of vehicles.

plus you figure there were only 4 cars in the mercury lineup. no major loss to the marketplace.

Only thing I'll miss is seeing Jill Wagner on the commercials.

Dad had a 97 cougar xr7 with the 4.6 v8 in it. I was really wishing someday they would bring that car back to it's glory day status. I think it even had the 429 cobra jet motor option for two years. Iconic american car. RIP mercury.

killing Mercury was certain with the Panther platform going away(Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis) the Grand Marquis was the only Mercury model that outsold it Ford counterpart.

Yea I was hoping for a Tbird/Cougar comeback with the 5.0.. But I guess it was not to be ...

I personally stopped caring about Mercury after they stopped making the Marauder, which is my favorite full-sized muscle sedan ever produced. But again, this discontinuation does not matter to me at all.

I don’t think this move has anything to do with any potential future financial trouble for Ford, which is arguably the most financial secure automaker in the US. I’d venture to guess that it is more likely that Ford recognizes this as a good opportunity (considering GM's recent reduction) to kill a brand that has been on life support for so long and focus more attention (time & money) on Lincoln.

also a valid argument. either way it goes the last really great car that mercury made was the 03/04 marauder.

The '03-'04 Maurader is a very nice muscle sedan. But it's basically a beefed up Grand Marquis (similar to what Chevrolet did with the Caprice to Impala during the mid 90s).

I wanted to replace the '94 vic I drove in college with a Maurader when I graduated college in '03. The Maurader's problem was that there was not enough muscle out of the gate.

Saw a article in a magazine where a guy put a termi drivetrain in a maruader,it was sick,430 horsepower at the rear wheels!
