Fellow Lead Foots Beware
The recession may be claiming a new victim: the 5-10-mph "cushion" police and state troopers across the USA have routinely given motorists exceeding the speed limit.
As cities and states scramble to fill budget gaps with revenue from traffic citations, "not only are the (speeding) tolerances much lower, but the frequency of a warning instead of a ticket is way down," says James Baxter, president of the National Motorists Association, a Wisconsin-based drivers' rights group that helps its members fight speeding tickets.
"Most people, if they're stopped now, are getting a ticket even if it's only a minor violation of a few miles per hour," Baxter says. He cites anecdotal evidence of drivers being pulled over at slower speeds.

X = Speed limit
Y = Speed
X >= Y : Legal
X < Y : Illegal
The moment you push the accelerator to 66mph in a 65mph zone, or any case in which X = Y+1 or greater, you are knowingly breaking the law and are liable to be punished for it.
Inb4 a bunch of self-validating cop-haters.
What? You didn't realize you were going that fast? Ever think you should be paying more attention when controlling a few thousand pounds of metal inches away from other people? This isn't Star Wars, you're not Luke fuckin skywalker, there isn't an autopilot option. Pay attention.
What? You speedometer told you wrong? Maintain your vehicle. It's not that hard to figure it out. If you're the 3% of the U.S. population that still doesn't own a GPS device, borrow one from a friend, plug it in, drive a steady speed and compare what NASAs multimillion dollar satellite says compared to your shitty dashboard needle. You don't even need to fix it ffs, just figure out the difference and drive accordingly.
What? The road started going downhill causing your car to speed up? HERP DERP DURRRR I WUNDER WAT THAT OTHER PEDAL IS FOR.
What? The speed limit goes from 65 to 55 to 45 to 35 within 100 feet? You have you driving license, which means you passed the sight test, so I know damn well you can see those signs. Plan ahead. And use the other damn pedal. You don't need to baby it either. They're built to stop quickly should the need arise. And if they don't perform that way, maintain your vehicle before bringing it on public road and creating a danger to everyone else.Last edited by 86 IROC-Z; 03-31-2010 at 12:09 PM.
