the elasticity of my dogs....
butthole is going to be tested tomorrow. I just cut up some deer steaks to marinate and took out the bones and gave one to each dog. The young dog took his out in the yard to chew on. My old dog ate his whole. He's gonna be hating that tomorrow. He's gonna feel like nhrafirebird after a saturday night date with superchargedblackgto.

If the dog DOESNT shit, then he may have an intestinal blockage... in which case he'd need surgery to remove it. keep an eye on him.

My dog has eaten all kinds of bone, but he does chew them up a lot before swallowing. Dogs are carniovores, they are meant to eat meat and bone. Their digestive system is designed for it.

My understanding is that dogs are made to eat the bones as well (as long as their raw, cooked bones can splinter). They've been crunching them up in nature for some time.

Yeah... and lots of wild dogs/wolves etc die because they eat a bone and have an intestinal blockage.
And also, we're not talking about dogs in the wild sense. We're talking about domesticated animals. They shouldnt eat whole bones. Now yes, most of the time they may just pass them... but sometimes not. Many years ago I had a lab that ate and passed a piece of lava rock. Doesnt mean it was good for him, or that we let him do it again.Last edited by 5.0THIS; 09-29-2008 at 01:02 PM.

Bones can also splinter in their mouth...I bet stitches in the mouth would be expensive. I heard only pork bones splinter though..

There are actually a lot of people who feed their dogs raw meat and bones for their total diet.
People have been doing it for years and swear by it. Some Vets also believe in this diet.
BARF. Yup, that is one term to describe one of these diets. There are many books and links for info on the "RAW" type diets for dogs and cats.
I myself have just never tried it. I feed a quality kibble and make a whole Chicken or Turkey Breast and wings every week to add to my dogs kibble along with a home made poultry stock/broth to mix in as well.
Raw bones will not splinter in a dogs digestive tract. However, swallowing anything too big can cause problems for any pup...
