Droid X, 2, or 1 Users: are you Rooted? Opinions!
I have the Droid X, and have been researching rooting the phone. It seems the code writers have dumbed the process down considerably, I'm still having problems with it
Are you rooted? What was the reasoning? If your not rooted, why are you against it?
Anyone have some information on rooting, and the positives/negatives?
Also, what process did you use to root your phone?

Let me respond by asking... what are you talking about? I have no idea what "rooting" means. I have a Droid something and have never heard of this, so clue me in please.

Rooting is a process that allows users of cellphones, and other devices, running the Android operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's Linux subsystem, similar to jailbreaking on Apple devices running the iOS operating system, overcoming limitations that the carriers and manufacturers put on such phones. Rooting makes it possible to use custom versions of the Android system such as CyanogenMod, supporting features unavailable in stock ROMs. It also allows for newer versions of Android not supplied by the original device manufacturer. In contrast to iOS jailbreaking, rooting is not needed to run applications not distributed by the official Android Market with the exception of AT&T phones which are locked from installing third party applications[citation needed]. It is needed however, when trying to access paid Android applications from countries which are not part of the paid applications market.[citation needed] Rooting is also necessary for certain applications and widgets that require additional system and hardware rights such as for rebooting the phone, certain backup utilities and hacks for hardware LEDs.

i have a htc incredible. I'm rooted. I like being able to do what i want on my phone. Plus you can't beat free wireless tethering, why would anyone pay $30 a month for something you can get for free.

droid x rooted with z4root. it was SIMPLE to do and can go back just as easy..... i rooted because i own it and feel i should have admin rights on the box and now i can tether via wireless connection with out using 3rd party crap such as pdanet. also installed an adblock app which is nice for those games that you don't pay for.. gets rid of 90% of the adds!

Found the file at 4share.com. For anyone searching for it on that website, you must search for "z4root.apk". Anything other then that will not bring up the file foe download.
It was very easy. Rooted in a matter of minutes. Now, I'm running Titanium Backup and SetCPU rooted applications. Freezing those stupid bloatware Verizon applications was my number one priority. Amazon MP3? Kindle? VZ Navigator? Skype? Psssshhhhh, frozen in time and no longer taking processor speed.
Krese, have any pointers for underclocking? I see the default settings are very low, and I thought I could set the 'Screen off' etc lower to save battery. Do you have SetCPU? If so, can you share your profiles?
Edit: is there an option yet to overclock the DX on the stock kernal?

Here is my profile I ripped from a android forum member. It should improve battery life drastically.
Temp > 49.8 C: 300mhz max, priority 100
Charging/Full: 1000mhz max, priority 98
Screen Off: 300mhz max, priority 92
Battery < 40%: 800mhz max, priority 50
Battery < 25%: 600mhz max, priority 65
I love being able to do this!
Just posting what I'm learning, maybe someone will see this and realize why rooting is badass!
Edit: Just downloaded Easy Tethering. Free wireless Wifi is awesomeLast edited by Hi-Po; 12-29-2010 at 10:50 AM.
