International commerce, tourism, and immigration. Combined with how hard it is to kill these things, and with how long they can live without feeding...

You hadn't heard of them because they had been mostly eradicated in this country over 50 years ago by DDT. Now we don't use DDT, and they've become resistant to it anyway...

The "sleep tight" part comes from back in the day when the prairie was 1st being settled by the white man. They called them "Sod busters" cuz that's what they did. Also due to the lack of wood they built houses out of sod. Beds lacking a proper wooden bedframe were constructed with interlace ropes to suspend the mattress above the floor. It was a constant effort to keep the hemp ropes taunt (tight) and keep the bed off of the dirt floor. Hence the "sleep tight" part of the ditty...

Ah. Hearing that, I will change my answer to 'no I didn't know that' as that does not sound at all familiar. Everything I know about prairie living comes from Little House on the Prairie! And they had wooden beds. Of course, on the show they were in Wisconsin, not really out on the Kansas plains...
