Question Do you think It's a bad idea to go into......

business with a family member. I have a very good business idea/plan, i have mentioned this to my cousin and he seems very interested in the business and would like to invest, however i still have my doubts about going into business with him because i have always heard it is a bad idea to go into business with a family member. Have any of you guys tried this before or can offer advice thanks in advance.

I would say this is rarely a good idea. Yeah it works for some families, but typically its a situation where lets say you own the company and your wife and kids work for you. Working with your cousin could suck depending on how trustworthy and driven he is.

Its a lot easier to fire someone you dont know then it is family. When its family, lets say they underperform..... you gonna fire them and then have dinner with them later? They always expect to get away with more as well

Both myself and one of my sisters work for the family business and it seems to be good so far.

It will only work out if everything is equal, including intangibles.

Family and business typically don't mix well. Some good reasons are already listed.
Some times it works out, but that is the exception, not the norm.
I have done it in the past...twice. Neither time did it end well. Add the cost and ramp up time of having to train a replacement employee... Just usually better to not mix family and business. On a large scale company the repercussions can usually be contained and minimized.. But if it's only two employees... It could be devastating to the company..
    Just my opinion.

You strike me as the type of individual that likes to be the chief and not the indian, in turn having to take orders from him would be epic fail. amirite?

you and your family must be nice, kind, honorable people lol other families dont always work like that. you are also immediate family, the OP is talking about a cousin. Heck I got cousins that if i were to walk passed them in a store I wouldn't even know who they were unless my mom introduced me lol

that's cause it's your dad and if yours is anything like mine he would pop you in the back of the head as an argument ender. haha

family and business don't mix. family you are stuck with, and business is generally seeing who you can screw over the worse to get ahead.

They are and I understand what the OP meant, but it seems many in here think working with any and every family member is a no no.
