Density Altitude - Tuning For The Weather
Density Altitude - Tuning For The Weather
We explain density altitude and how it affects your tuneupAll of us have experienced the effects of changing weather conditions on the performance of our hot rods. The car feels stronger near the coast on a cold day, yet it gets lazy as the ambient temperature rises or the elevation above sea level increases. The reason for this has to do with how many air molecules are present in a given volume of space; if they are packed more closely together, more air (and hence more fuel) can be crammed into the engine's cylinders, resulting in higher engine output. These trends are apparent even if no fuel-system calibration changes are made in response to differing weather conditions. But if attention is given to properly dialing in the fuel system for the actual ambient weather conditions, it is possible to realize even greater performance gains under favorable climatic conditions while minimizing performance degradation under unfavorable ones.

best of luck then. maybe you'll get the chance. don't think I've ever been told what the DA was/is at the couple tracks I've ran at before. How do you find out?

the DA for today, at the track I'll be at next weekend (Ben Bruce in Evadale,Tx.), was 1700ish. So, nothing compared to what your working with.

I could deal with 1700.
We just never have a really cool day here while the track is open, plus the track is on the side of the foothills....at 5800 feet up.
