    Definition of "Muscle Car"

So I was talking to my uncle yesterday. He says that muscle cars use big-block engines exclusively. I've never heard of this definition.

This would make the more modern trans am, camaro..etc. not muscle cars. He said that they are "sports cars."

So...anyone care to shed some light on this? I always defined a muscle car as a non-luxurious and affordable car with a engine with at least a powerful V8. I never made the distinction between a big block and a small block when it comes to defining a muscle car. I mean...very few cars carry big-blocks today.

    My life is a
    Ben Stiller movie.

we're actually considered "pony cars" but that term was replaced when real muscle cars died in the 70s.

tss is correct. but from what i hear our cars are too small to be considered muscle cars so they were deemed pony cars but that doesnt necessarily make sense either. but i dont pay attention to it because our late model pony cars put out real performance. thats what i was looking for and i happened upon mly z

Big Block Cars are sometimes reffered to as "Rat Rods"...

That era designated BB as Rat motors & SB as Mouse Motors....

Plus, there are a few "Muscle Cars" that sport V-6's..... GNX, GTA etc....

actually are cars were considered pony cars, a car with a long hood and short rear deck i.e. bustang, camaro, firebird, and the smaller chrysler and dodge and amx cars defined with long hood and short rear deck. i guess they said pony cuz the bustang at the time of intro was hot shit.

as far as rat rods go they are customs from the 40-60s that appear to be unfinished and just for driving not show and use parts from as kinds of vehicles. and muscle cars were american 2door, midsize, affordable, rear drive, v8 cars sold for street use or drag racing which could be on the street or track.

To me a muscle car is a vehicle that runs on brute strength, stuff for the track and for the street. big tires, low MPG, lots of displacement, that kind of stuff.

Sports cars are things like porches and SLK's..Vettes kind of fit into both categories in my opinion.

and then theres ricers...piss on them

To me, a muscle car is a V8/RWD car with some nice HP and torque. And puts a SEG on yer face.

Ask your uncle what he thinks of the GTO?
    389? 400? 455?
Hint: Pontiac didn't make a big block.
Anyone would argue that the GTO was
    the original muscle car.

x2 makes it sound like it's a mustang.

given the ls1 fbodys destroy most of their competition, i would consider them a muscle car.

i also hate it when kids call their jap crap "tuner" cars. it's a fuckin ricer and you know it!

i'd say pontiac made all big blocks, given the massive size of them! even the 350 is huge....

I read a review on i think motortrend, about a 2005 GTO and a 2006 Srt8 charger. They Gto out performed it, but they gave the win to the Charger because it had more options than the Gto. Sunroof, nav, ect... I was like

i consider anything that is american made, RWD, with 2 doors and alot of horsepower (i wont specify it has to have a v8 because i consider the grand national to be a muscle car and it is a turbo6)

Yeah, I think the mass auto publications have been "pussed out". Options/toys shouldn't play a role in a car's performance. That is why I subscribe to GMHTP. They state the TRUE potential and aftermarket support for our cars. NOT a car's toys/distractions. IMO, if ya want a living room sofa on wheels, buy an Infiniti or the like...if ya want BRUTE V8 power, with basics, then buy a muscle car.

true ... the 64 GTO was where the whole Muscle car name was born ...From say 1959-60 the full size cars ruled .. 409 Impalas , 421 Catalina's and such.. But when that 389 got put in the mid-sized Tempest ,, that changed the whole game ...

It really doesn't matter. This is like a debate on God vs. evolution, or two monkeys throwing shit at each other. Just think what you want and call it a day.
