dad had a saying..... (long)
growing up my dad always used this and the torch was passed to me and my older brother. We use it all the time these days. He's say "(our last name) luck....tons of it and it's all bad." That kinda luck happens to everyone such as the heat in your car never quits working in August and the a/c never quits working in December. Normally for me I tend to have that kinda luck when I'm trying to do something that saves money. Like work on shit around the house here....never goes right and if it does it makes me wonder what's around the corner. I've had one of those weeks that came to a head today.
First up was the brakes on my old truck. The ABS light has been on and I was wondering how much money I was going to have to sink into it to get the ABS light off so I can sell it. Gave a guy $20 to scan the ABS since I don't have anything that scans ABS and it ended up being a wheel sensor I forgot to plug in when I did the brake lines ( although there's still something wrong with the other wheel sensor but it comes and goes so I'm not fixing that one). Figured I saved a few bucks vs taking it to the dealership to have it scanned.
Next was our septic. Tank filled up and I had to have a guy come suck the shit out of the tank. Instead of paying $142 to have them snake the lines from the house to the tank I went and rented a power snake for $55 and did it myself. Saved a few more bucks.
After that was the furnace. Furnace started acting up so I tore into it and it ended up being an $8 relay. Cheap furnace repair.
At this point I'm wondering when the expensive shit was coming.......it came today.
We have an old ass soft maple in the front yard that was on it's last leg. It needed to come down and I was going to call someone out to take care of it. Normally costs $500-$600 to have a tree taken down. Sunday a guy stopped out of the blue and said him and his buddy would do it for $150. They show up today and get it pretty much all topped out and then the last limb came down and took out all the phone lines next to the road. I called the phone company to have them come out. They haven't gotten here yet but I imagine they're gonna spank my ass pretty hard on this one. Not sure what they'll charge to run 3-4 phone lines but I imagine it's not going to be cheap. The guy that hit the lines says he's insured but there's no way in hell I believe him. After the line came down him and his buddy got out of here with the quickness. I'm guessing when the phone company calls him he's gonna say "what tree?" Oh well, I was due up.

I thought you were going to say they dropped the tree on your house.

I guess that would've been much worse huh? There really wasn't much that was threatening the house. Just one big limb. They got that one with no problems and cut 2-3 other big ones on the side close to the lines. That was the last big one they had left and that's all it took. It broke the line to our house which isn't a big deal because I never answer the home phone. It pulled 2-3 other lines away from the pole that cross the road though. I have them tied up now but there's a semi that goes by from time to time out there and there's ~ a foot of clearance when they go under it. Wouldn't be surprised if one takes them out tonight at some point. I'd even thought about cutting them.
